recommendations - 13 yo with anxiety (and likely ADHD)
So, I posted in Parents of School Age Children (linking if anyone is interested)
My original post
My question is, does anyone have recommendations for a doctor that diagnoses and treats anxiety/adhd in early teenagers? It is WAY past time to stop pretending it's all going to magically get better as she gets older...
Also looking for a recommendation for a therapist that deals with anxiety in the teenage set (and, of course, whatever other issues come along with being a teenager).
Message me if you prefer. TIA

My friend has a son who is dealing with this. Where are you located?

My daughter (10) goes to CBT Solutions in Centereach for anxiety. I highly recommend them. DD's teachers swore up and down she had ADHD but she does not. It is all anxiety/OCD driven. A therapist is the way to go and after they get a handle on the anxiety, it will be easier to see if there any other co-diagnosis there. The key though is finding a therapist that your daughter clicks with. If you do not think it is working, switch. I went through at least a dozen therapists before we found one that clicked and we've been with her for about a year now.

Thanks! This is not too far away. I will definitely look into them!
Interesting about the ADHD vs anxiety/OCD driven behavior. Thanks... this is good to know.
I'm a little worried about the not clicking aspect of it. I am afraid that my daughter will get worried that she's "unfixable" if we switch a lot. Alternatively, I worry that she will say everything is going great because she gets anxious about change. You said you switched up therapists a bunch at first... Did you find anything like that with your child? Ugggghhhhhh... this whole thing is making ME an anxious mess!

Olivia Velting or any of the psychologists at the Psychological Health Collaborative in Roslyn are great.

I think it is how you approach with your daughter. You are not taking her to a therapist to fix her, you are taking her to learn some new techniques on how to deal with certain things. We stress alot with my daughter that EVERYONE is working on something and it is nothing to be ashamed about. As far as switching, you may be lucky in finding one that clicks right way but you will know if it is working or not. A good therapist will have you join the meeting the last few minutes to go over what was covered, new techniques learned etc. You should get a good feel on how it is going just from that as well as the behaviors of your daughter throughout the week. Changing therapists shouldn't be posed a a negative but a positive on giving her the best you can find. A bad therapist is worse than no therapist at all.

Thanks. I guess we will just continue with the positive outlook, then. She is the one who feels "broken" and like she needs "fixing" (these were her words)... so I'm just afraid of exacerbating those feelings with therapists that don't fit.
I also don't want to invalidate her feelings or alienate myself even more by constantly shoving sunshine and rainbows at her, either... she already says I don't understand, and honestly, she's right. I've dealt with a lot of s&^% as a teenager, but random, unexplained anxiety attacks was not one of those things. So I just don't want to make things worse accidentally, or say the wrong thing.
Sigh. I'm not sure I'm going to make it through the teenage years!!!

So, I am bumping this to see if anyone has any experience with either of these therapy providers:
Kimberly Hession at Great South Bay Therapy in Sayville
CBT Solutions in Centereach (KarenK, you recommended this... going to message you)
And if anyone has any other recommendations, I am happy to hear them.
Ugh. It's so hard to randomly pick a therapist for your kid... it's hard enough to pick one for yourself!

Are you looking for treatment in the way of medication? My son saw Dr. Robert Perret in Stony Brook, he's a clinical psychologist. He does not prescribe meds, but will call your child's doctor and have them write any scripts. He does cognitive/behavioral modifications and therapy.

No, not necessarily medication...we have an upcoming appointment with a psych for an evaluation in case she winds up needing meds for her anxiety. Looking for more along the lines of "talk" therapy. And thanks! I will check out Dr. Perret as well...
