We sailed on an older Holland America ship to Alaska with kids.
Was an overall good experience. We typically go on newer ships on NCL/Royal so different. Kids enjoyed kids club which was small and intimate.
Not too much as far as entertainment but that may be better for a non-Alaska cruise.

DH & I took an 11 day southern Caribbean cruise on HAL and it was the most polite cruise we have ever been on, lol (we've been on Princess, Carnival, Norwegian & Royal). It was a longer cruise and in November so there weren't a lot of kids on board but due to the average age on board, it was a rather quiet cruise. In the research I did before we went, I saw other people say the kids club was fantastic. The food was good, staff was nice, and stay out of the way when they put the bread pudding out at the buffet, lol.

My in laws have done a bunch of holland America cruises. Right now they're on a 2 week one to Europe 
From what they say and I read, it's an older crowd... not a ton of nightlife type stuff going on or a ton of kids activities. So I guess it depends on what you're looking for... they rave about the food though!!

I hated it. The food was just ok and the ship was rather boring. It's definately geared for an older crowd. My husband and I spent most of the trip napping cause there wasn't anything to do. I would choose another line if you could
