Re: Urgent Care vs Primary Care doctor

I see a primary care doctor and get in the same day if I'm sick. A physical on the other hand needs to be booked 4-6 months in advance Chat Icon I like him a lot though so I just know to schedule my physicals well in advance.

I only go to my doctor for physicals anything else if needed Urgent Care. Usually no wait and always convenient to my time.

Same for me, also the Urgent Care is closer to my home than my PCP's office is, & I like being able to go without making an appointment, & go late in the day. Just more convenient all around.
I just do well visits with the PCP so I can get yearly bloodwork (though I'm not great about going every single year, though I know I should).

My primary care dr you can get a same day sick appt but they make you wait foreverrrrrr in the waiting room. I've never walked in and out but I do at urgent care places which I like.

I love the urgent care I go to. I wish I could use them for primary care. I don't even have a primary care doctor, if I'm sick I go to urgent care, if I have an ongoing issue I go to the appropriate specialist. I'm not waiting months and paying an extra copay to be farmed out to a specialist when I can choose one myself.

I think the private practice primary care doctors are becoming dinosaurs, particularly in large cities. They send patients with chronic issues to specialists and with the rise of all these urgent care centers, their sick care business is dwindling. They're going to have nothing left to do. Not to mention new doctors are hesitant to choose it as their specialty because there's no money in it. Basically, millennials are going to shut the primary care business down.

I agree with this. If i have an issue I go to a specialist. What the heck is a family doctor going to do for me? Take my BP?

A PCP is helpful so that a person has a centralized area for medical concerns. Once this happens a doctor may be able to identify areas of concern. An urgent care facility does not necessarily have all of your medical background/history.

An example: two years ago you went to an urgent care facility for ABC ailment. 6 months later XYX ailment comes up. What if the two are related? If you go to one PCP, the medical staff will be able to review current AND past illnesses to see if they are related.

Just my opinion.

That's nice in theory but they probably wouldn't even notice, lol. You have to be your own advocate and connect dots like that for them. Maybe that sounds negative but that's my experience.

I use urgent care for me and my kids. I use the ped for issues that I don't trust urgent care for. We had a car accident , no injuries, but I wanted them checked out. I called my ped and he told me to go to urgent care. We use pm pediatrics in syosset. Quick and clean. Would def use them again

i'm really not a fan of the urgent care places. I prefer going to my primary care if I'm sick or have an issue that i want to address with him before a specialist. Usually I can get an appt within a day or so for a sick visit and for my yearly checkup/bloodwork I just make sure to call a few months ahead so I can get the date/time that works best for me.

It depends on the practice. My primary care dr will see me same day if I'm sick. Physicals take a long time to get an appointment. The first time I went there I wasn't a patient. I was sick and needed to see a dr and I still got an appointment.

Right. Probably won't notice. Tons of patients, not much time to give, etc.

I'm thinking the same thingChat Icon If that's the case, you need a new Dr. ASAP!!!! They don't see you without having all your medical records on the screen in front of them.

Re: Urgent Care vs Primary Care doctor

Another urgent care fan here. Regular doctors offices have restricted hours and you are always on their time. I can't go "tomorrow at 10:30am." Then you get there and they are 2 hours behind.

I work full time and if I need to go to the doctor (which I rarely choose to do), I need to go when I can - whether that be first thing in the morning, lunchtime, or after work.

urgent care is not to replace a PCP, they will even tell you to follow up with your PCP
