Going away & not taking DC
We are leaving our baby with his grandparents for a few days. I remember reading posts about leaving them with a signed note allowing them to make medical decisions, if God forbid, they needed it. I don' t remember very clearly what I have to do. I will make a note with his pediatrician so that they are aware but what else?
We don't have wills finished yet but is there anything else that I can leave behind just in case there is an emergency?

You need a NOTORIZED Medical Power of Attorney so that someone else can make medical decisions for your DC in your absence. A signed note will not suffice. An ethical medical provider cannot and will not provide non-emergency treatment without one.

Yes, definitely get a notarized letter. I've had to use them to get medical care for students I was chaperoning and the hospital was so happy we had it.

We just did this when we left DD with my in-laws. We left them a notarized letter stating they are allowed to seek medical care for you DS with her insurance card.

Question on this - my son had strep throat this weekend and I was away and my husband was at work. My mom took him to PM Peds and they provided treatment, no questions. Is this a violation?
I was away with friends who always leave notes and they were surprised he was given treatment.

Question. Let's say you don't do this, didn't know to do it, whatever.
Then God forbid your child needs medical care and you can't be reached. Do they just leave them to die?
Really?
ETA- sorry, just read it's NON emergency treatment. Makes sense

Unless they have an appointment, wouldn't anything that comes up be considered an emergency? So shouldn't they treat the child? I'm not saying don't get have the form, it sounds like a good idea, I'm just confused. BTW, I had to take DD3 to a doctor we've never been and I didn't have to give any ID at all (I didn't have anything with me). I didn't even have the insurance card, but I had the policy info. And, when we were at the pediatrician, someone brought their grandchild in - they were given the sign-in tablet and the grandma said she couldn't fill anything out because she didn't have the info. I left before they were seen, but I think it was ok with the front desk. I noticed these things because of Straightarrow's recent thread

I know when I fill out our info with the ped it asks if anyone else has permission to bring DC and their information. Idk that they would turn them away if someone not listed brought the child in but I wouldnt be surprised if they hesitated on anything not completely necessary. Also, in the case of an emergency where you're going to the ER rather than your regular doctor who knows your child I'm sure its helpful.
When I dealt with the ER it definitely seemed like they would treat anyone who came but that it's just much easier to have the form. Otherwise maybe they'd have to wait to reach the parent by phone or something. I had a student that hit her head and they wanted to do a CT scan. Of course the doctors and I were in touch with her parents but they were happy I had the form and in the case that the parent wasn't answering the phone or something you wouldn't want them to be hesitating on tests or treatment.

I don't think your child would ever be denied treatment but my concern is my parents not being allowed to make a decision on my DS medical treatment or being kept away from my child since they aren't the legal guardian

Is there a reason you would be unreachable? I personally think it's unnecessary. Any real emergency the hospital wouldn't ask you what they should do, they would follow life saving medical protocol. Any non-emergency you're a phone call, skype, email, text, airplane ride away.

Re: Going away & not taking DC
Having a notarized note is probably best, but we've always just given our parents a copy of the insurance card. We're also reachable by phone. I've signed plenty of medical treatment authorization forms for school, daycare, camp, etc and never needed them to be notarized.

Re: Going away & not taking DC
My mom used to make me get a notarized letter. It wasn't a set form. Just something that said I authorize her to make decisions regarding medical care.
I also got my will done because I didn't want to get on a plane together until it was done.
