Donating to causes
This came up recently due to a text from a mom on my daughters soccer team who asked for donations for a family in the next town over . Do you feel that you are bombarded with too many requests for donations for numerous causes in this day and age? gofundmes, the stores that ask if you want to donate a dollar etc.

Donating to causes
I don't feel bombarded but I certainly don't donate to everything in presented with. I only wish I had the extra cash to donate to more bc there are plenty of causes I don't give to that I'd like to or causes that I'd like to give more too.

Re: Donating to causes
I know what you mean. I will donate a couple of dollars here and there. I wish there was a way that stores could keep track so you are not put in awkward position saying no. Because I hate saying no.
When I go to CVS... they have various charities through out the year. I will sometimes donate between the $1-3 dollar range the first few times. But hen I go to petsmart and donate there. People at work are always sending out emails from polar bear plunges to walks.
I wish I could save the world and help everyone out.
i am a monthly guardian for ASPCA and a monthly donor to the humane society.

Donating to causes
I'll donate to certain causes. We had a young girl ring our bell one night during the winter asking for donations for chemicals in LI water or something. I felt bad for her since it was freezing so I told DH to grab the $10 bill I had in my wallet. She said "actually the suggested donation is $26." Seriously?
I also had kids from the local hs ring my bell at 9pm one night, waking DD up. They wanted money for a trip for the track team. I told them I'll gladly pay for trips when the baby they just woke up was in hs and their parents should be doing the same. I mean really? You send your kids door to door asking people who already pay a sh!t ton in takes to fund a flucking trip? At 9pm? Screw you.

Re: Donating to causes
Not really. But most of the requests I've seen are via Facebook...I don't usually get emails or texts about them and if people ring my bell, I don't answer it.
I'm doing my own fundraiser right now - walking around the entire island of Manhattan in one day to raise money for an organization that greatly helped me heal emotionally after cancer...I only put it out on Facebook. It never occurred to me to email or text people, that just seems a bit intrusive and puts people on the spot.

Re: Donating to causes
I only donate to certain organizations and causes I personally know of or can be vouched for.
I have a friend who works with the West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition. Not one person in the organization gets a salary. What's raised through them goes directly to the people of Long Island (not just West Islip) for their care. Be it travel to and from Treatment, getting a Wig or just some help around the house.
When I am approached about something I don't know, I usually message her and she is able to tell me right away if it's a reputable organization and how much of my $ actually goes to help the cause itself.
To add: i have no problem saying No. Too many people are out to make $$ by preying on peoples good heart and nature. It's unfortunate, but true.

Re: Donating to causes
To certain causes : - MS Society to honor a friend with the disease. She does the walk every year and we try to participate. - American Heart Association to honor my husband who survived his heart attack. We do the walk at Jones Beach every year and fund raise for that. - Autism Speaks to honor a close friend whose nephew is autistic. - Bike to the Beach, fundraiser for autism awareness.
Does Girl Scouts count ? I get cookies out of that.
I'll donate at Petco if I am they are fundraising when I shop.
I wish I could do more, but I have to draw a line somewhere. Then there are the fundraisers that have me raising an eyebrow wondering if they are legit or not, or the fundraising is for something outrageous.

Put it out there. That's what DH and I do for the American Heart Association. FB, e-mail, texting. We've got a team, and we have a goal. It's not like you are doing this for a trip to Disney.
After all the years of donating to people's various causes, it's amazing how these same people forget you when you come asking. I don't like to go the tit-for-tat route, but that first year of fundraising really opened our eyes to the tightness of some people's purse strings.

Maybe I will send out an email this weekend
