My daughter is having surgery Wednesday at Huntington Hospital. Someone from the business office just called me, seemed to have her information, but asked me to take care of the hospital copay of $300 up front to save time that day. She said any charge from the doctor or anesthesia would be additional and billed directly from them.
But I felt a little weird about giving them a credit card over the phone before services are even rendered yet. Is this normal? Has anyone had surgery at this hospital and had this happen?
Thank you!
ETA; When she called the number came up NO CALLER ID

Unfortunately this is becoming more the norm. Hospitals and Dr's are taking the money at the time or before services are completed so that they know they are getting paid. If you aren't comfortable you can always say can I call you back and then find the number and call the business office to confirm it's legit.
I have to pay at the dr before I even get called in. They calculate what they think it will be before the dr sees me and I am responsible for the difference before I leave the office.

Re: Huntington Hostpital
I was hospitalized and had a c-section there in October, and this does not surprise me. Although mine was emergency, so they did not contact me beforehand, it sounds like something they would do.
I would be uncomfortable with it too, just because what if the surgery is canceled or something. Just tell them you prefer to wait until the surgery is done to pay.
Why not ask for a call back number and then call them so you are sure it is legit?

She did leave me a message when I missed the call initially, and when I called back her recording just said "Hi this is _(first name only_), please leave your name and reference number and I will call you back. I'm just surprised because surgeries are cancelled all the time for sickness for whatever.

Re: Huntington Hostpital
I just did this recently with surgery. It did make the day easier for me. They said if somehow surgery was cancelled, I would not see the charge.

I just had surgery in March at NUMC and did not have to do anything. They said they would send me a bill.

Re: Huntington Hostpital
I had surgery two weeks ago and again over the weekend. Business office came to see me while in my room to tell me my portion of the stay $1500 and did i want to pay now. I Still had the IV in my arm. I told her I had no way of paying at that moment, she said send it i when you can.
This past thursday and friday they lvm letting me know for this weekends surgery my copay will be $250, i can bring cash, check or card.
So far i paid this time at admission for the $250, still owe them $1500
I would never pay over the phone either bring it or ask to be billed
Good luck

Re: Huntington Hostpital
This is common where I live (in FL). I had to prepay my OB and prepay the hospital I am delivering at and I am due in June. It's the "norm" here.
