Re: Cost of renting instrument?
Depends on the instrument. Both my boys play an instrument. One plays the trumpet, the other plays trombone. It cost $130 per instrument for the school year.

I think $130 is the going rate for many types, but it depends where you go. One shop near me was like over $300 a year. I ended up buying a violin on Amazon that works GREAT! ADM brand, and it was $70 for the case, 2 bows, rosin, and extra strings. Her music teacher said it was a gorgeous piece!

Thanks :)
I saw some sites online where you pay monthly but I know nada. I figure I'll call around soon and find out but was looking to get an idea. That's cool to know about the violin.

For DS it has been around 100-120 for a clarinet. I don't remember the exact amount. He has been playing it for 3 years, so I should have bought one, but I didn't know he was going to do it for this amount of time back then.

Our school recommended Paul Effman but I rented for a lot cheaper from someplace on Jericho in New Hyde Park, Laconia Music I think its called.

Re: Cost of renting instrument?
We rent instruments through the school district and the cost is $35 for the school year. It goes up to $40 if you would like to keep it over the summer.

I am so glad that many of you are shopping locally! Please keep the small local businesses in mind when renting or purchasing. Many of them are hurting because of online competition from Amazon. Online stores don't have a personal touch, and 2 of the owners I know personally have expressed concern about inferior instruments that they end up having to fix, anyway. Many of these small businesses guarantee the quality of the instruments they sell. DH is a band director and often suggests parents ask him about an instrument before buying one based on price alone. Renting, too. They can always offer the best advice.
