Parking Vent, long

As background, I need to park in the street. There are a lot of two family houses in our neighborhood, so parking is tight. Usually, I could have parked in "my spot" in front of my door, but sometimes there was nowhere to park on nights and weekends. I get that it's street parking and anyone can park there.

I'm a SAHM and during the day, I never used to have a problem parking.

Recently, employees of a business two blocks away have been parking on our street, taking up most of the spots near me during the day. Some of them stay until 8 or 9pm. When I am dropping off or picking up my child from pre-k, one of the employees will often park where I had been. They will also try to squeeze in at the corner (illegally parked), making it very difficult to get out of my spot. It's really starting to annoy me. When there was snow everywhere, I was standing on snow piles trying to get my infant seat out of the car. One of those days, I twisted my ankle when the snow shifted underneath me. I also have pain walking because of a foot condition so I am extra grumbly about this.
DH says we should complain to the town. Is it out of line to call the business and ask them to provide employee parking or have them park somewhere else? (there seems to be other places they could park that wouldn't be where any local residents park and is closer to their business) We were thinking this was a temporary thing due to construction at another business, and still may be, but it has been going on for a while and it seems like they are bypassing other places to purposely park here...

What can the town do? Its public parking on the street.

It's worth calling. I would assume commercial properties are supposed to have an appropriate parking plan. I don't think they should be taking up parking on residential streets.

And if you actually see them parked illegally as you mentioned about the corner, I'd call that in too.
Yes, you can park on a public street but no, you can't park illegally.
It's dangerous too

If it is public parking on the street, there is probably nothing you can do about it. Sorry :(

I have the opposite opinion. If you purchase a house near zoned commercial, there has to be a reasonable expectation that you may get overflow cars parking on your street. One of the caveats being that close to a main road.

If they are parked legally there isn't much you can do. I doubt there is a law or ordinance that requires business provide their own parking.

Parking Vent, long

Although it is public parking, there are plenty of residential neighborhoods that require a residential parking permit to avoid situations like this. The business eorkers would not be able to park there if this were the case. Call the town and find out about that.

Try the company first and then try the town.

I see plenty of neighborhood that have no parking signs up during certain times, some with no parking unless you have a permit. If enough people are complaining maybe they will insitute that kind of parking around your neighborhood; though you might be better calling your local representative to try get things changed.

If it is a village you live in, you could complain to them. In my village in western nassau, you are only technically supposed to be parked on the street a maximum of 2 hours. This does not work at house because we are a 2 family house with not enough driveway space.

We just moved to a building in a residential area. The town does have requirements for parking in this particular town and the number of spots required depended on the number of offices. But, we are also allowed to park on the residential side streets too.

I would call the company and complain. They may be asking employees to park on the street to leave room for customers and their cars.

That's what I think too, probably nothing they would do. But, I thought calling the business might help, if they want to be neighborly.

I have to agree. It wouldn't even occur to me to complain to anyone, though it does suck.

If this business doesn't have a lot or room for a lot I don't know what they're supposed to do either?

I agree there is probably nothing I can do and I'm not planning to report the cars parked illegally. Just venting and thinking about asking them nicely not to park here.
They aren't that close to us - they are crossing a main road and then driving a couple blocks into the neighborhood, passing a seemingly good area to park along the way. They do have a lot, but probably don't let employees park there.

It doesn't hurt to call the company and ask. I mean the worst thing they can say is no or appease your request over the phone but not do anything about it.

I'm curious though, with the distance you describe, how in the world do you know that the people parked there are employees from THAT particular company? Couldn't they be from some of the other companies in the area?

Re: Parking Vent, long

I don't know if this is true bc I remember that the residential streets around the LIRR station often had signs prohibiting parking during certain hours or length of time - I can't remember exactly but I'm guessing it was so that parking on a residential street wouldn't be take up by LIRR commuters leaving their cars there all day. I say it's worth a call.

I work for a company that is on a very main road. When making the parking lot, my bosses made extra space to accommodate for employee parking. However, we grew as a company and hired more employees. We sometimes have to park on side streets so that we can leave street and lot spots open for patients.

I think my boss would try to figure out another solution if concerned neighbors called about our parking on their side streets. I would start with calling the business first. I don't think calling the town will get you anywhere considering the street is not your property.
