Allowances

Do kids still get allowances lol? I remember when I was young, my friends all had allowances but I didn't, so I dont know what the appropriate age is, how much, and if it's even still a thing anymore.

Allowances

I plan on doing it when the kids are older in exchange for chores.

Re: Allowances

I'm not planning on it. Not that I will never give them cash, just not as a regular thing & not to use at their own discretion. Some may not agree, but that's how I raised & it worked out fine.. I never asked why I didn't get an allowance bc it just wasn't something I was ever used to. Occasionally I'd ask for money for something specific & my mom would usually buy it for me unless she didn't think I should have it & then she wouldn't. If I was going out with friends she'd give me money for that specific outing. She gave me money specifically for food at school or bus money. But never a set amount of cash every week to use how I wanted... and I'm glad she didn't because my pre-teen/teenage self would have blown it on crap. Instead she'd regularly put some money into my bank account (custodial so I couldn't access it til older) which I now appreciate so much more. People say giving an allowance helps kids learn how to manage money which I'm sure can be true if it's done right, but I've always been really good at budgeting & being frugal so I don't think any harm was done by not having an allowance as a kid.

this is how we parent our kids. You are expected to help because you are a family member. My kids have what they need and some of what they want.

No...I don't give allowance. I buy them the stuff they need, and occasionally want. My kids are pretty useless when it comes to chores to be honest. And I don't push it, because my mom made us clean the whole house every single day after school, and we resented her for it. It was absolutely ridiculous. So, my kids have a pass...for now anyway.

Re: Allowances

I did get an allowance I always did associate it with chores but my parents always said you get allowance because I feel like giving it to you not because you are doing chores.

My parents also never bought us anything unless it was our birthdays or xmas even easter we would get some toys in our basket. They never just took us to the store just to buy a toy just because.

Whatever we got wasn't much. I probably used it on the ice cream man and when I got older in middle school/high school I probably used it to buy more snacks at lunch or maybe something small I wanted. However by the time I was 16 I was working and I completely stop asking for money from my parents. Not even lunch money I just used my own money for everything. Once in a while I would ask by not often.

With that said DD who is 6 gets money from us here and there. Mostly when she does a chore. I do this so she can save for something she really wants because like my parents I will not go out and just buy her something because she wants it. She gets toys for xmas, birthday and easter. (Don't get me wrong will buy them small stuff on occasion but its very rare. )

My boys are still young but I plan to give them an allowance. I think an allowance is a great way for them to learn about money management, saving for things they want, saving for the future, etc.

This is why we recently started to give our 6 year old one. We want him to understand that basically money does not grow on trees. That mommy and daddy work hard for us to have a nice home and things. Having him understand that he needs to save his money if he wants a new toy or to do something is important to us. We don't want him to think that everything will just be handed to him because he 'wants' it or that we will just buy him something.

He has three responsibilities to do a week to earn his $5.
