They also do this because Obamacare has become a nightmare even for them. Not to make this political at all but my Doctor has mentioned it.

Re: Doctor VIP/subscription only program?

It's not an ObamaCare issue, it's insurance companies on the whole who have ruined medicine. As long as it's a for-profit industry, people will suffer.

I know of a few doctors who do this and it's not at all a new practice. Their clients are wealthy and prefer to go outside of insurance because they can afford to pay. This pre-dates Obama.

I understand that doctors have earned the right to a high income, but if you become a doctor, I would certainly hope that you do it because you care about people not just a paycheck. Your bedside manner cannot possibly be that great if all you care about is how much you're being paid. There is a frightening lack of humanity today.

I'm glad for organizations like Partners in Health where the best of the best become doctors for the purpose of helping people, not just making money.

I can see how it's a have vs have not thing. But should doctors work around the clock with their phone always ringing because they have 2000 patients? Are they not entitled to run their practice like a business and enjoy some time with their families. To me trashing Dr for making money is the same as people who have nasty things to say about teachers getting paid too much. It's a job, it's not
Volunteer work

DH is a surgeon and some of his colleagues have gone this route. They were usually the most busy and established. You can work less for the same or more money. At least in our circles, it seems like the guys who already put their dues in and want a more comfortable life before retirement do this. You can't just do this right out of residency/fellowship since you won't have the patient base to pay the premium for you.

Doctor VIP/subscription only program?

I read an article on this the other day. It was a perspective from a doctor who just switched over to this type of practice. He charges a fee for the year, but doesn't accept our bill insurance. There are also no Co pays. It seemed like a regular membership (like to a gym, museum, or theme park). You go for free whenever you want and you get discounts on the extras (like medications for market value). The biggest misconception he faced is that the patent does not think he/she needs? additional insurance. But the membership only works with that doctor and not an er visit or other specialist. But he does a lot of things people might go to an er for. Our pediatrician does not do stitches. You have to go to an ER for that. This doctor does them. I believe he does x-rays ?too. It's an interesting approach of you pay for insurance anyway and have high copays. You could probably get a lower plan and do this in addition. I don't pay for my insurance, not do I have copays, so I would never do it.

Nope. That is ridiculous.

I can speak for myself .. As a licensed psychologist, we have seen improved coverage for patients, lowered copays, more people covered, and less red tape under the ACA, which is all GREAT.

So no. Don't even go there.
