Bike with Training Wheels for a 3 year old?

DS will be 3 in April and I was thinking about getting him a bike with training wheels. Is this an age appropriate gift or should I wait until he turns 4? I am not sure if he fully understands pedaling yet - he can kinda do pedal on his tricycle. I am thinking by summer he might have the skill mastered and want a big bike.

thats about when we got my DS his first "real" bike. he was like 3/3.5. we got him one of the small 10 inch ones with training wheels. he caught on pretty fast to the peddling thing, and he had fun with it. i think its a good age!

Have you considered a balance bike? My dd got one at 3 and loved coasting on it. At 4, she got a "big kid" bike without training wheels and she mastered it easily. My dh said he only held her for the first 10 mins or so before he realized she didn't need him to

DS got a bike from my IL's for Christmas. He's 3.5. They got him the Paw Patrol (12 inch) with training wheels. I was worried it would be too small because he's above the suggested height listed on the box, but it's actually the perfect size. We got him the matching helmet. He enjoys riding it around the house (still too cold to use outside), but I have to hold him steady & help him pedal... he isn't very coordinated on his own yet. I think by summer he'll get it.

Our kids are same age. Dd is getting a bike in Apr with training wheels. I showed her a balance bike but she is all about the real bike with training wheels.
