Jake’s 58 casino opens in Islandia

http://www.newsday.com/long-island/suffolk/jake-s-58-hotel-and-casino-opens-in-islandia-1.13183598

undreds of gamblers crowded into an Islandia hotel Monday to play electronic slot machine games and sip drinks as Suffolk OTB opened Long Island’s first video lottery casino.

OTB officials are hoping to hit their own jackpot with the betting parlor, which they say will help bring the struggling agency out of bankruptcy.

The casino’s first 265 video lottery terminals opened at 1 p.m., just hours after the state Gaming Commission issued a certificate allowing the facility to open at Jake’s 58 Hotel & Casino, on the north service road of the Long Island Expressway. Dozens of casino customers already had lined up in the hotel a half-hour before the betting parlor opened.

Suffolk County Regional Off-Track Betting Corp. officials have said they expect the casino to generate about $164.25 million in profits each year — enough to help wipe out about $15 million in debt, create 250 jobs and save another 250 jobs.

...

Jake’s 58 general manager Chuck Kilroy called Monday’s opening a “soft launch” because there were only 265 video lottery terminals. He said 34 machines will be added next month, and a total of 1,000 will be at the site by summer.
...

I knew they were working on it, but they kept the opening pretty quiet. This is the first I've heard of the casino being open for business.

Hopefully it won't be as seedy as the casino at Aqueduct.
DH and I went a few times in the beginning when it opened, not anymore.

Jake’s 58 casino opens in Islandia

It opened the end of February.
It was in the news recently because they want to add metered parking and everyone was going crazy.

Friends of ours went over the weekend and they said the wait for a slot machine was over an hour...

now I have never been know to hit it big on slots... but I will only play at a total rewards casinos... at least if I am going to lose we get free rooms and comps... so we can lose more money in the future. Chat Icon

No but seriously when we go to Vegas we have never had to pay for a room.

I live not too far from Resorts World at Aqueduct, it's not awful. I like that they got in electronic 3 card poker. To me, the place is actually better than AC because of the no smoking policy. Not to mention it's a 15 min drive. You have seedy characters at any casino imo.

People in Queens were expecting it to be a traffic armageddon, yes in the beginning it was hairy, but it's no issue now.

Hope the LI one turns out to be ok too and provides jobs.
