Canister cause thats what i grew up with!
Same with a toaster oven instead of just toaster! We always had one.

Canister. As PP said, it has more flexibility. I have a power brush for carpeting and another brush for hard floors. Then there are the attachments for other cleaning. I can get under furniture easier, its a lower profile.
I also feel they have more suction power than uprights.
eta : I'm only pushing around a hose and brush. With an upright, you are pushing around the whole heavy thing. Had an upright once and hated it.

Vacuums-upright or canister
Upright. I had to use a canister at work the other day and it was horrible. I have all the pros of both. Extendable handle and power brush. Move it or keep it stationary. The navigator has a 25 foot hose and can be removed so you can use it like a canister or an upright. And I love the fact that uprights do not need bags. I always find that after a few years the bags are so hard to find. I love just emptying the cup and move on.
