Elecare formula

Anyone's baby on Elecare for a milk protein allergy. DS has such a severe allergy that even the alimentum is giving him trouble. He's now on Elecare and alimentum mixed. The GI wanted him in straight elecare but it's too thin and he gags and vomits. Any feedback on how your baby did on it? DS has horrible stool still and blood in the stool. I'm taking him for testing but in the meantime looking to see if anyone's baby improved with it

Re: Elecare formula

My daughter was on neocate - I think it's basically the same, but neocate is produced in a completely dairy free environment. The first two weeks she had terrible reflux/spitting up, which she hadn't had before, but after that was amazing. She would choke a lot, it was scary, but so worth that brief period of being horrible.

Re: Elecare formula

Both of my children were on Elecare for a milk protein intolerance. It is very thin, so for both babies I thickened it with rice cereal. You don't need much...for a 3oz bottle I add 1/2 teaspoon of rice cereal. You might need to go up slightly in nipple flow size when you do this, but it makes a big difference and they keep it down. The rice cereal might bind them for the first week, but once their body gets used to it you'll see a whole new baby.

As pp stated you may need to thicken the feed -- dont use ailementum bc it has milk protein in it. Use oatmeal. Its less binding.

Both of mine were on small amounts of rice cereal in their bottles as early as 4 weeks.

I have to agree with this I have heard you should not use cereal in bottles at all regardless of age. And I have heard horror stories from it.

My DS was on elevate and he did well on it.

Re: Elecare formula

Dd1 was on neocate, which is similar. She started spitting up when we first started it. Our gi recommended adding some rice cereal (earths best or beech nut --- not gerber because they add soy to a lot of their products and babies with milk allergies often also have soy allergies too). It worked really well. We'd just put a small scoop into each bottle.

ETA: I agree with pp to check with your gi doctor. Adding rice cereal has some controversy. Your doctors will let you know if it's the right thing to do.

Yes, please consult your ped. I've been there, so I get why you asked on here, but you have to be very careful with giving solids to babies that young - especially ones with the symptoms your child is displaying.

If I had thickened my daughters bottle with oatmeal, or rice - the result would have been BAD at that age - I'll leave it at that. Her reactions to those foods at 8 months were SEVERE to put it simply, I cannot even fathom what they would have been at 6 weeks! I'm not trying to make you paranoid, I'm just sharing a different side

Please be careful. Issues with dairy and soy can sometimes, not often, but sometimes indicate intolerances to other foods as well.

Thank you! Yes I was told prior to having them rice cereal in bottles isn't good. My son is on an extremely strict no dairy/ milk diet until after 1 year of age. I had to stop giving breast milk as well, even if I went dairy free, if I had a trace of it, the GI feels he would have a reaction given his symptoms. I just started to increase the elecare in bottles to 2oz, seems to be tolerating it, but much fussier like he has horrible gas so I'm not sure anything is working yet formhim

My DD was the same way. She couldn't tolerate the alimentum and I had to give her Neocate. The neocate was so thin and she had reflux. She would choke on the bottles. Her whole body would stiffen and her eyes would open wide. I had no choice but to add cereal to her bottle. I was always so against doing that but it worked for her. She's 13 months now and still on Neocate with added cereal.
