Traveling alone with a child
I'm flying alone with my 6 YO DS over winter break.
I am not normally a nervous flyer (at all) but I am a bit nervous about this.
I know millions of people have done it before me but I am still stressed about it for some reason.
Like going through the x ray machine and all that - I hate the idea of even being separated for a moment in a busy airport and trying to watch my stuff too.
It's just one way (will be meeting DH.)
Any tips or advice?
Ugh - this is not like me.

Re: Traveling alone with a child
They let my 6 year old go through with one adult when we flew in the fall.
So she went through the metal detector thing with DH while I did body scan and on the way back we switched and he did the body scan and I went through the metal detector with her.
Not sure if it's the norm but this was at both Islip and FLL and they were very very nice about it.
So you may not have to be separated at all

I fly all the time with my kids, solo. At the airport, since you have a child with you, you both go through the metal detector, not the body scanner. Let your child go right in front of you, then they wait right there while you go through. It's really easy. I don't worry about watching my stuff, I've never had anyone take something off the belt. I don't think people would do that with all the cameras in an airport!
Make sure you bring clorox wipes to wipe down your tray table, etc. Nasty stomach virus, etc. still going around and you don't want her touching all those nasty germs, then eating a snack!

This - I haven't had any issues. I make sure my stuff is on the moving conveyor belt before we go through and we walk through the old fashioned metal detector.
Kids don't need to take their shoes off either so they are good to go as soon as they are through which makes things easier (it was more of a pain when they did).

Re: Traveling alone with a child
DH and I have both flown solo with our two kids. No big deal. I just have kids go through the detectors right before we go. We never get separated. They just wait on the other side while we go through.

It is normal to be nervous, but I'm sure it is going to be easier than you imagine. Even at 11 y/o, one of us can always go with DS through the metal detector. As someone said, they don't need to take shoes off, so that's easier. That's a good age to travel solo with them, because they understand better and are easily entertained.

Re: Traveling alone with a child
Lol! My husband is a terrible flyer, so I essentially travel with 3 kids solo as his brain turns off when he gets to the airport. Yes, you go through the metal detector (not the X-ray machine) with your kid. We usually get pulled out of line because we are with young kids. I make the kids carry their own luggage (starting from 3) and this makes it easier. I always get tested for drugs on my hands & luggage. No big deal
Pee before getting on the plane and order a drink for yourself while flying!
You will be fine!

Yes, you'll be fine. TSA is not allowed to separate families- I think you are all supposed to go through the same metal detector. When we flew home from Orlando an agent made DH go through a different metal detector and she got screamed at (literally) by a supervisor- "You are not to separate families!" It was super chaotic but fortunately we didn't lose track of each other.

Omg this is me, my DH is worse than my son. My son walks right through and I am right behind him. He also rolls his own luggage. I always have a snack for him to eat when the play takes off and lands for his ears.
You will be fine and he is older so it will be easier. I travelled for the first time alone when my son was 3, one of the best trips.
