When do you move your child up to the next clothes size?
My dd is 3.5 and was wearing today size 5 pants and a size 6 shirt. My cousin's son is 4 and is still in 4T. My dd is a little taller than him and I think outweighs him. I told her I do the arm stretch test. If I can see dd's belly when she puts her arms in the air then the shirt is too small. Her pants have to be to her ankle or a bit longer and not look like floods while standing or sitting. I have sizes 4T to 6 in her drawers and closet right now and do a fit test every morning to make sure things fit properly. Most of the 4Ts are being purged but some still fit. My family has been asking what clothes sizes for her birthday and I'm telling them size 6 with adjustable waists and they think I'm nuts. For the past 3 birthdays she always goes through a growth spurt right before or after her bday. Dd is 97th percentile for height and 50 percentile for weight.
How do you determine your kid's clothes sizes?

When do you move your child up to the next clothes size?
I think it depends on the kid and their shape.
My ds is 5 and 39 lbs but is the right height for his age so he can wear smaller clothes a lot of times. He is only in size 5 pants for length but waist he could actually fit in 18 month clothes still if they were long enough

My ds is also 3.5 and wears mostly either 4T or 5T. I don't have much of a method besides just noticing when stuff starts looking tight or too short, then it comes out of his clothes drawer & gets passed to his younger brother.

When do you move your child up to the next clothes size?
My DS is 2.5 and wears 3T pants and 2T or 3T in shirts. The 3T pants are a little long on him, but if he wears 2T it looks like he's going to a flood. I usually size up at this age assuming he'll grow into it.

I move DS up a size when things get too short. He is a real skinny kid so he does not fit in his "age size" he is a size or two behind.

Re: When do you move your child up to the next clothes size?
My DD is very big for her age (she's 4 1/2 and wears 7/8). There have been times where I sized up every six months and times when it's been a year.

Re: When do you move your child up to the next clothes size?
When I notice it getting tight or short. Generally she wears a size for a full year.
She is 6.5 and wears a size 5 in bottoms and as size 6 in tops. I only moved her up to the 6 tops recently as I noticed the 5's were looking a little short and a bit tight.
But in pants she is still in the size 5's- and has been for over a year now
ETA- and reading back over these other response now, DAMN is she tiny for her age!

Re: When do you move your child up to the next clothes size?
I have skinny kids. I move up kids when pants and sleeves get too short. They are average height so their age size fits them.
Kids are 5 and 7 and wear size 5 and 7. Pants are getting short and i plan to move up to 6 and 8 this month.

My dd is just very tall. We went to a school open house and everyone assumed I was signing her up for k or 1st grade because she is the same height as their kids. When I tell people she's only 3.5 they look at me like I'm nuts.

We have a friend with a very tall almost 4yo. He is as tall as a 1st grader. He is actually taller than his sister who is actually in 1st grade. Everyone used to thnk they were twins but now people think he is older. I am sure he wears a size 6 or 7 even though he is only 3. He isn't fat, just very tall.

Re: When do you move your child up to the next clothes size?
It depends on brand of clothes. I find that some shrink very quickly (gap and some carters) and are too small even though my kids will still fit into the size.
My DS who is 6 can wear 4T-7. With coats/sweaters, I oversize. Bathing suits need to be small since he's skinny. 5T fall off him.
DD who is 5 wears 5-6. Girl clothes fit differently (tend to be tighter and less forgiving). I can buy big dresses that are flowy and get a few seasons from them.
Usually I switch sizes each season. Not buying a new wardrobe if I can stretch it til shorts season.
Also, at 3, kids are chubby and that's the thing that gets clothes not to fit well. At 4, they start to thin out and get taller. Things that may have been tight may actually fit better. Then, you worry more about length.

I move them up when their clothes look too small.
It's hard though when people ask what size my kids are because it varies by brand.
My son just turned 7 and he's in 7 or 8 tops and 5 or 6 bottoms. My other son is going to be 5 and is in 4t or 5t bottoms and anywhere from 5t to 5 regular tops...

generally when they get too short. my oldest is very skinny (and short) for his age and never outgrows clothes because they are too tight. he just turned 5 and is still wearing size 4T. i tend to go up a size in shirts with him because he has a longer torso and short legs. so i will probably go up to size 4/5 shirts soon and keep him in 4T pants until they get too short. it seems to happen overnigt!

When the sleeves or legs get too short, they get put aside ... I don't really go by sizes. My dd will be 5 in may and is short and skinny... wears 4/5 clothes.

Re: When do you move your child up to the next clothes size?
I usually size up at spring and fall to get 6 months out of a season.
I figure short sleeves I want to last April - September so I will get the next size. Some may fit from last year.
This past fall DD was same size as summer. So a full year at the size, she has a few months out of current pants but I won't buy shorts in this size as I figure I need them into the future.

I think it also really depends on sizes of some brands. I find Gap Kids and Zara run really big, but Old Navy and Carters runs smaller and shrinks more often. DD is 2 1/2 and some things she still fits into 2T, but I put her mostly in 3T because I think she is more comfortable in clothes that are a little loose.
I just bought 4T clothing for summer/fall.

When do you move your child up to the next clothes size?
a big pet peeve of mine is short pants lol so I move up when they start getting short.Shirts I tend to buy bigger in general but def when the belly shows or the sleeves get short. DD will be in March and is wearing 4 or 5t tops and actually same for bottoms.
For all gifts I ask for bigger clothes so I have them. I don't usually need more int he size she's wearing, especially with an older sister
