My husband and I are planning our first trip to Europe for this May! We're planning to go for 10 days, the last 2 days being in Paris - this was his one request lol. 8 days in Italy... we were thinking 4 days in Rome (maybe going to the Amalfi coast for 1 of those days), 2 days in Florence and 2 days in Venice.
For those of you who have been to Italy, is this too much? What would you change about the days? Should we cut anything out and do you have any recommendations?
Thank you in advance!

I would cut out Almalfi since its South and completely out of the way. There are better options than the Amalfi Coast such as Otranto for example. Since you will be in Venice, I would probably add Milan instead. This way you wont be rushed. If you stay anywhere in Rome, make sure you stay close to the sights Piazza Novona, Pantheon, Campo di Fiori or anything near Corso Vittorio is a great location.

I would also cut out the amalfi coast - only because I don't think one day is enough there, and it's not that close to Rome (we drove- it's supposed to be like three hours but we had traffic and it was definitely longer). I think if you went, you'd regret not having more time there.
Have fun!!!

I agree about cutting out Amalfi Coast, but if you are looking to stay at the beach, perhaps you can consider Nice, France.

Re: Italy
That's four cities in 10 days and LOT of traveling. You will come home exhausted.
I would probably cut out Venice and do the Amalfi Coast or Cinque Terre or Tuscany.

Re: Italy
WE did Florence and Rome in 10 days. Remember it's a day of traveling too. This was about 9 years ago though. I think it's doable. If it's the two of you and you get up early you can see a lot in the day.

I would NOT skip Venice. If anything I would cut days out of Rome or skip Florence.
If you want to go to the Sea - I would go to Cinque Terre.
I have done - Rome/Cinque Terre/Florence/Venice in 12 days and it wasn't insane.
Sorry - I just read that you were going to Paris at the back end - I would do Rome/Florence/Venice if it was just 8 days.
I don't think the travel between these cities is grueling at all - Rome to Florence is a quick train ride (about 1:30) so the travel won't exhaust you, and Florence to Venice is only like 2 hours. I would fly into Rome and out of Venice.

Re: Italy
I would cut down Rome to 2 or 3 days, that was my least favorite. When I went we started in Venice, my favorite, and did Florence, traveled through the Tuscan countryside which I would recommend, Rome and finished in Sorrento.

Its all a matter of likes/dislikes. I lived in Rome for a year and travelled frequently after moving back to NY every 3 to 4 months. Its by far my favorite city in Italy because there is so much to do, plus the nightlife is amazing if you know the right places to go. My least favorite is Florence and thats typically everyone's favorite. Ive been to Venice 5 times, including for Carnevale and its rained every single time:( So i would say that's another one im not too fond of. If you did decide to do the Amalfi coast, then you definitely should do Capri, Ischia etc.

Re: Italy
Thanks everyone! I really appreciate the input! We're going to cut out the Amalfi Coast and stick to Rome, Florence and Venice. We know we'll come home tired but we want to see as much as we can! :)

Very good point. You seem to have much more experience with the area then me having only been there one week lol
I'm sure a lot goes into opinions based on experiences. I hope the OP has a great trip wherever their travels bring them

Re: Italy
I personally would do less days in Rome and add a day or two in Amalfi. I went for the first time last summer and loved it there. I had been to Italy twice before.

My advice is to cut Venice. I'd start by flying into Napoli or Rome, 2 days in Capri and Ischia. Then Rome for x days, then on through Pisa to Florence Then as others suggested, Liguria/Cinque Terre/Camogli/Portofino If you fly Genoa to Paris or Milan to Paris, you can get some great deals.
But I'm just not a huge Venice fan

It's funny how everyone has different preferences regarding these areas. I agree with the PP Alexb - loved Rome but didn't love Florence.
