Muslim teen in the news last week arrested for making up the story about being attacked/harassed by 3 men on the train
The teen was arrested for filing a false report. She lied due to family problems (parents upset she was becoming Westernized) and trying to distract her father from her own actions of coming home late, and dating a Catholic. To accuse false men based on race, and to accuse commuters of not coming to her aid, despicable. Videos proved her story false as did her own inconsistencies when she was investigated.

Wow thats terrible!
But it doesn't make all of the other hate crimes reported illegitimate or fake. Lets not deny that hate does exist.

DH & I called it when she first said this happened... Didn't sound legit... I'm glad she was exposed for the liar she is. I bet she's not the only one making such false claims.

DH & I called it when she first said this happened... Didn't sound legit... I'm glad she was exposed for the liar she is. I bet she's not the only one making such false claims.
My husband felt it was false. I honestly said, could be, could not be. I was really surprised to see this on the news tonight. It's very interesting that this stems from her own issues with her own family failing to accept her becoming westernized (if this is true, just stating what the article states). I saw her neighbor on the news the other night, kind woman, brought her flowers to console her…when she was 'attacked". The neighbor stated they were lovely people who did not deserve "such treatment". So it's really horrible that time and efforts from the police were wasted on a false claim (which is why she was arrested). Lying about such is serious stuff.

I thought it was weird that the bystanders didn't do anything
But i dont think its fair to now call most/all of the victims of hate crimes liars

As for the OP, I suspect your motivation for posting this is political. As if this delegitimizes the recent hate crimes (some video taped) inspired by the Donald. I don't think so!

I just had a feeling it was fake. Something about the way she was telling the story.
And the fact that nobody witnessed it.

But it doesn't make all of the other hate crimes reported illegitimate or fake. Lets not deny that hate does exist.
Of course hate exists and of course there are MANY legitimate instances of hate crimes... I don't think anyone would deny that.
But to think she is the only one lying of all the people now coming forward with these types of stories would be naïve. People see it as an opportunity for pity & to further their narrative.... "See!! Trump supporters are all racist & violent!" And then people can say "How horrible, this is ALL caused by Trump being elected!" and post about it on FB for the shock value. With no proof that any of it actually occurred (such as this woman's story which plenty of people believed without questioning it).
Just like it was in the news last week that a vandal who was spray painting racist statements in public places was actually an anti-Trump protester who wanted to make others believe it was done by a Trump supporter.
Can't believe everything you hear or see, no matter how much someone might want to believe it.

Why would it be ok to post about these hate crimes, but not ok to post when one of them is exposed as a lie?
It is ridiculous to comment on her reasoning for posting something, just because you don't agree with the person's political views.

I stand by my this is absolutely terrible that this girl would do this. She cried wolf and it will now take away from the seriousness of hate crimes that ARE happening. If The OP said something like this it would be a nice change!

I hate when people fake reports of any type. Harassment, rape, racist graffiti, etc, etc.
Too many people take that one example of a fake report and say "See, these things are fake, and here's proof, so ALL similar reports must also be fake".
It puts a cloud of uncertainty at least, on the 99.9% of legitimate reports of things...

Why is it not her place?
Many Trump supporters made comments questioning the motivation of people who were posting honest questions to Trump supporters asking them if they really are in favor of what is going on. Was it their place to do that?
You can't have it both ways.

Agree. It's the poster, not the post.
The same can be said for most of the posts on this board by most people regarding political issues. Every thing said on here can be reversed in reverse scenarios. ETA - I have NEVER EVER said all stories are fake. I have said some are fake and I did not believe every single account was true. I have never said otherwise, so don't put words into my mouth.

I agree. There have been way more legitimate incidents against Muslims, people of color, the LGBT community, and women, since Trump was elected. But let's choose one false story and harp on that.

I'm utterly and completely disgusted by this. I heard it this morning and quite honestly I can strangle her, because this absolutely will take away from actual hate crimes occurring.
I didn't read the article, but I heard on the news this morning her parents shaved her head as punishment.

Actually one of the articles said that she missed her curfew and was afraid of being punished by her strict parents so she made the story up.
Her parents had her shave her head as punishment over the incident and for dating a Christian.

I hate reading stories like this because it puts a bad light on the true stories that are out there.
And I'd just like to say that to call out the op out for posting this article is ridiculous. She did not say told you so or all reports were fake. Its a news story just like all the anti-trump people post all day long.
Unfortunately hate crimes are nothing new and were here before Trump and will be here long after Trump. The fact is that it should never happen at all so whether it is 10 times or a 100 times is irrelevant. This a a major problem in our society and has not be fixed by any President and has been on the rise for years.

I don't believe anyone was saying anything about hate crimes in general. This particular false story went viral. People were angry at the Trump Supporters who attacked her as well as the NY subway riders who stood by and did nothing. Then it was well publicized she was missing.
