1st birthday/pool party question poll
it's SO far away, but Dh and I were just discussing having dd's birthday at an outdoor pool since her bday is in July. He and I both met lifeguarding, and thought it would be nice to have it at that pool and have the party in the rec room after.
We have alot of family, and had over 50 people for her christening, which just consisted of aunts, uncles, and cousins (no friends). We have alot of friends with kids, though, and obviously want to invite them since it's a kid's birthday party. We don't want to have over 100 people at this birthday party, though.
We were discussing maybe just inviting our friends, immediate family, and family members with kids. Do you think it would be rude to not include certain cousins and and aunts/uncles because of that?
If we invite everyone, we would have the scratch the whole outdoor pool idea. We like this idea, though, because it's not too expensive, and is alot more laid back. We can just order pizzas and soda and call it a day

1st birthday/pool party question poll
How I look at it, you're not going to throw a birthday party for 100 people every year. Since it's her first, you might consider it. You could make this her big party, choose a different venue, and invite everyone, and save the pool for another year.
If you want to do a smaller party, then I think just immediate family and friends with kids is fine. Maybe address the invites to the kids so it seems more like a kids party and hopefully others will understand that.

1st birthday/pool party question poll
We chose to have a bigger first birthday and a smaller christening (just immediate family). It was either one or the other for us.

I think you should invite everyone for the first birthday. It is usually the only one where you invite everyone. Plus a 1 year old can't really enjoy a pool party.

Re: 1st birthday/pool party question poll
I think a pool party for a 1st birthday isn't the greatest idea.
You will have to spend the whole time in the pool with her, she will be wet, you will be wet.
Everyone with kids will have to go in the pool to watch them.
Just a lot of chaos.
I'd save the pool party for when she is older and can enjoy it and chose another venue

Agree. I'd be pissed if I wasn't invited because YOU wanted a pool party when this is supposed to be about the child. If the child was old enough to actually know what is going on and wanted something like that, then fine. There will be plenty of years to give the kid a pool party.

Agree with all of this. I would have it elsewhere, regardless of the number of people.

1st birthday/pool party question poll
all good points- thanks everyone! definitely going to continue to think about it in the next few months.. We also wanted to do a bigger 1st birthday because it's an important one. We may just look into renting a big space instead

I agree on all points. The first birthday is a big deal and it's the only time, aside from a bat mitzvah or sweet sixteen you'd be inviting extended family.
Plus a pool party for a 1 year sounds like a sht show to me. Dd1 was happy and content at hers Dd2 was teething and my never fussy baby was miserable.

This . And I'd also be pissed I didn't make the cut if I didn't have kids If it were me and that happened, I would make damn sure I never went to anything for your child in the future.

This part always gets me. We don't have kids but love to celebrate with our friends and family who do. I get not inviting us to a 1-1/2 HR ball pit party. But a bigger/real party? I'd be hurt

Have the party you want to have. In my family we don't invite cousins to every party. No one gets offended. I have kids and would not get offended if I did not get invited to someone's kid's party.

Re: 1st birthday/pool party question poll
I said invite everyone to a different, larger space. I sort of speak from experience. We had my DS's first birthday party in my parents backyard in early July and invited our entire families. My parents have a pool so it became a pool party. It was sooo nerve wracking to have to watch and worry about the new walkers and toddlers getting too close to the pool. But what I will always remember and DS says looking at pictures of the day, is how special it was for all his family to be there. That's the most important thing IMO. Every other year, you can do what you and then your DD want to do.

Re: 1st birthday/pool party question poll
I'm gonna have to disagree with everyone else bc we did have a 1st birthday pool party. We have a big backyard and pool. We wanted to invite immediate family and close friends with kids as well. We have a backyard with a pool so why wouldn't we have a pool party?! it was July as well and super hot. We hired a lifeguard. For those people who wanted to go swimming went and for those kids or adults who didn't there was plenty of seating, playground, music, outside toys, and of course food and drinks. Adults had a drink and enjoyed sitting outside and some kids went in the pool and others didn't. My 1 yr old DS didn't stay in the pool the entire time. My IL's took him in to cool off while I entertained or my parents, or even aunts and uncles. He wasn't in the pool the whole time either. We had kids all ages so the older ones were fine by themselves while their parents watched and if the LO's wanted to go in a parent brought their bathingsuit. Usually it was the father. Our friends are all so laid back and love going swimming. We didn't have one adult annoyed about it being a pool party. We have a fence around the pool as well so if you weren't in the pool with your LO you didn't have to worry about them walking around the pool either bc of the fence. I say do what you want. People who want to celebrate will go and enjoy. If anyone has an issue with a 1st birthday pool party won't go.

The pool is one aspect. The other thing you and I didn't have to deal with is the space issue. Would you rather have a pool party leaving out family members who don't have kids, or no pool party but all the family/friends can all be invited? I say opt for inviting all family and friends. It's more important to me than having a pool.

I get that, but it depends on how the family is. We don't always invite cousins to parties. Just immediate family and friends. What about 2 parties? A pool party for friends and then a separate one for family? Just trying to think how she can save money. My SIL said she may do separate bc having it at a hall can cost a fortune. If you want to save. We also didn't have a Christening. We had a Bris, but it's different bc that's when they're just born. I think if I did a big Christening and then a few months later is the 1st birthday I'd do it smaller.

We didn't do a big first birthday celebration. We did do big Christenings.
I think a pool party would be ok with just friends and immediate family. But, I wouldn't invite cousins with kids if you aren't inviting cousins without kids - some people may be offended.
