Thoughts on General Mattis (Def. Sec. nominee) getting a waiver

The gist of the article is that you need to have been retired from the military for 7 years to be considered eligible for Defense secretary. Mattis only retired in 2013, therefore, he needs a waiver approved by the Senate. This waiver has only been done once before in the past 60+ years (for extenuating circumstances) and when it happened, Congress specifically stated that is shouldn't be used as a precedent to do it again.

Sen. Gillibrand says she will not vote for the waiver.

I feel like rules are rules, and having a civilian in this position is very important. If you look at Mattis' (who's nickname is "mad dog") record, he is a little over the top in my opinion.

But I think we need a military mind.

Oh and I think one senator's choice not to vote in favor is brilliant. That's the point isn't it? To represent the opinion of his/her voters?

So I would hope the rest do what they think their voters want. And if their voters disagree I hope the voters boot them on their arses. Frankly I'm still more for congress term limits and Senators getting kicked out!
