Company Holiday Party

So, our holiday party is next week.
Still debating whether or not I want to go.

We received an e-mail from HR yesterday explaining that the door prizes are now taxable at Fair Market Value and will be reported on our W-2. Employees who win prizes will have to pay the tax.

I realize it is the law, but really, Bah Humbug.

Unless it is something really worthwhile, a lot of people will be declining the door prizes.

Wow- what kind of door prizes are there that they felt the need to claim them on your taxes? It better be something really good!

It does seem bah humbug, but I would guess your company had no choice but to notify everyone. I wouldn't let that keep me from going if I normally enjoy the party.

It's nice that they notify everyone.

We get Amex giftcards for milestone anniversaries - for 15 years I got $150. They taxed it and didn't tell me. It was annoying!

ETA - Our door prizes aren't typically taxed since they are donated by executives, not the company itself (and we only had them last year, I don't think we will have them this year).

The gifts are usually donated. A handful are pretty good, like airline tickets or a weekend hotel stay in the city, tickets to a Broadway play. Others are just plain old crappy ones, like travel mugs or a pen set.

This isn't keeping me from going to the party, it's just that there is no morale anymore and I'm trying to get the oomph to want to go and try to be social.

The only reason I go to my company party is for the prizes. If they started taxing them I would probably not go. I'm actually surprised they don't because they give us a 20 dollar gift during the year and they tax that. My paycheck with the extra 20 dollars is lower then when I don't get my 20 dollar gift.

Maybe they do tax the holiday gifts and I just don't know it since I've never won...
