Community Service Opportunities??

DD is 12 and we are looking for some community service ideas for school and religion. We are in the Bellmore are and are looking to stay fairly local. Between school and swim she has limited time but she wants to make time especially during the holidays Any ideas or suggestions?

Try the library. Also Island Harvest Food pantry and local animal shelters. Bobbi and the Strays in Freeport usually needs volunteers but you would need to stay with her at her age.

Our church has a youth group and they have community service opportunities so you might want to check with your church. Also, soup kitchens are great opportunities.

Ronald mcdonald house is always looking for help. You can collect things off their wishlist or bake treats for the families. Check the website or call and they'll tell you exactly how you can help.

Birthday Wishes! She can organize a party supply drive, or bake for them. They do birthday parties for homeless children all over the island.

The Little Hands program at the Ronald McDonald house is nice, but it books up very quickly.

Try your local parish, sometimes they have mailings or need volunteers to work at holiday events.

Also check your library. Mine puts volunteer opportunities for teens in its monthly newsletter.

ITA with Ronald cDonald House....my job does a lot of Volunteer work for them, usually Cooking dinner for the family members, but they need all sorts of things. You can also check for volunteer group on meetup. I belong to one. There might be one close to you. Or even if you don't do it through there, it can give you some ideas of places.

if she is good in an academic area maybe tutor a younger student, also agree with every ones suggestions.

If she likes animals the shelter is always looking for volunteers. They need dog walkers and the also have people read to the animals.

The Girl Scouts could do a collection of magazines, puzzle books, toiletries for thr the VA Hospital.

My Cubs did a sock collection last Jan. We had a snowball fight pack night where we played a bunch of games using a few pairs of socks. The new socks were donated to a shelter.

Some of these are wonderful! My 6 year old DD asked me if we can donate new books to the kids in Africa the other night, so I do want to start letting her volunteer even at this early age. She has such a big heart. I was thinking of maybe going to a nursing home since my DD loves old people. Maybe we can bring a smile to their face or read a book with them.

We are in almost word-for-word the same position. My DD is also 12 and between swim and school, there just isn't much time (who knew swim could take up sooooo much time!!!) We are also looking for community service/volunteer opportunities for school - only difference is, we are in Suffolk county.

I'll be watching this thread for ideas that may work for us, as well.

When I needed confirmation hours I worked in the Recreation department at the local nursing home - helping out at Bingo, etc. I ended up staying for many years.

Animal shelters are great, too. I volunteered (as an adult) at Save a pet in Port Jeff and now that I am back in Nassau I tried the town shelter and Last Hope. For the former I keep having conflicts with orientation and the latter never called me back. 12 might be too young though.

Long Island Cares is good too although most opportunities seem to be in Suffolk. I volunteered there this summer in Hauppauge.

I would start ASAP because a lot of places are going to require orientations and training.

thank you all we got some great ideas from this. We found a few good ones through our library and the school is offering some opportunities as well

Check out your local fire departments too. Most of them have a Junior Firefighter program that teaches fire safety, CPR, First Aid and gets them involved with numerous community agencies for volunteer purposes!

RMH is amazing. When DD was at stonybrook, their family room was a godsend. They can always use sample sized toiletries, snacks and beverages, etc. Definitely check out their wishlist.
