Parents of babies with milk allergy and or reflux
My DS has had bad reflux and gas since birth. Long story short my doc had us try sensitive formula, then zantac, and then zantac with ailumentum. His stool tested negative for blood. I thought he was getting better and was thrilled. Went to the GI today bc I had an appt previously scheduled and figured why not follow up. He checked the stool and it showed blood. He switched the baby to alfamino the equivalent of neocate. I got home and made the bottle and the consistency is like water. He has had 4 bottles so far and 2 he spit up a lot more than usual. But this last one it was like a river - it just kept coming up and he was completely soaked. I feel like im at such a loss. Did anyone else go through this? I feel like he isnt getting enough food. Will this improve with time or should I contact the GI? Thanks for any advice

Re: Parents of babies with milk allergy and or reflux
It should improve with time. Those formulas are so thin. My DD didn't have reflux, she was on neocate for allergies, but she had some reflux for the first few weeks on Neocate because of the consistency. I couldn't believe the amount she was spitting up, but the GI said it was normal and would get better, and it did.
That being said, I would personally still call the GI just incase it's not normal for your child's situation. It never hurts to call.
Good luck and hope things get better soon!

Thank you! My heart is just breaking for him. Did you ever thicken it with rice?

We didn't thicken it. The GI suggested it, but didn't push it. Our ped said no way. Turned out my LO is allergic to rice anyway.

My DD was the same. She had reflux and a milk protein allergy that we discovered when she was 2 months. When we switched her to Neocate she would spit up and choke on the formula because it was so thin. We started thickening it with oatmeal cereal and it helped so much. My ped said 1tsp for every 2oz but we always just put 2tsp. She drinks 7oz bottles and still only gets 2tsp of cereal. It was a little bit of trial and error finding a nipple that worked with the thickened formula. I wasn't too keen on the idea of adding cereal at such a young age but she needed to eat and the choking was scary!

We are in the exact samw boat! My DS has been on the added oatmeal now for 24 hrs and he is like a different child. I am thrilled he is comfortable. Did you find your child ate less ozs when you put oats in bc it is more filling?

Re: Parents of babies with milk allergy and or reflux
Dd started with reflux once she started neocate. Our gi had us add a little rice to her bottle and it worked like a charm.

our dd is on alimentum for these reasons. When we first switched, she spit up alot more than usual, but after 2 weeks, it got way better. It takes 1-2 weeks for babies to adjust

I'm glad it's helping! My DD pretty much drank the same amount. Maybe slightly less at first but not as much as I thought. She's 11 months now and still drinks 4 bottles a day with 3 meals. She loves that stinky formula!

I actually just took her to an allergist bc she had hives after eating eggs. She tested negative to both eggs and milk. He said she could still have a reaction to milk and it will be trial and error. He said we can try after she turns 1 and see how she does. That's what my pediatrician has said all along.

Weird how it came up negative. Ugh! Good luck with the switch :)

Parents of babies with milk allergy and or reflux
Both my boys had milk allergies and reflux. We used zantac and alimentum with my oldest. We used zantac and neocate (tried alimentum and a few others--nothing worked) with my youngest. Both needed rice cereal added. Both always spit up regardless.
My little guy continued to spit up a ton after 2 weeks on neocate. GI sent us for a sono and he had something called pyloric stenosis. He required surgery at 7 weeks to correct it. The projectile vomits ended after that, but he was still a spitter.
My insurance covered both alimentum and neocate in full with no copay. I got a delivery to my house once a month. GI took care of calling insurance and setting everything up.

Re: Parents of babies with milk allergy and or reflux
my dd had reflux and a milk allergy. her first 2 months were so rough. we had tried 6 diff formulas in 6w. By then we finally found out about the milk allergy and GI prescribed elecare. she was on zantac starting around 5w old. she cried a lot but once we got the formula figured out and the help of Gerber soothe drops, everything worked out. the formula is def very thin!! she was on the meds until about 11 months and elecare until 12m. She is now 15m and outgrew everything! Eating dairy and whole milk with no prob. When giving the baby a new formula it takes at least a week to see improvement. Good luck!
