Hernia surgery
I heard there are two types of surgery:
1. one with a mesh screen
2. one where they use 3 holes to fix it
My father had the mesh screen one before and he always said he was told by the doctor not to lift heavy items (like forever afterwards) and so on.
But now he has another hernia and wants to get #2 because he heard it hurts less and recovers faster.
But he called his old doctor and they said they don't do it.
What kind of doctor does this? (GI doctor?)
Anyone have experience with this, Pros/Cons of each, etc...

Hernia surgery
A general surgeon does it. I just had an umbilical hernia fixed during a gall bladder removal surgery. It was done laparoscopically with the 3 holes and going through my belly button.

Thanks for the reply.
But if I was to look for the "general surgeon" what do I look for?
For example "Orthopedist" is for joints. Podiatrist is for feet.
There must be a specific name for the hernia doctor

Hernia surgery
My husband just had 3 done. Two laparoscopic and one with the mesh. The mesh one was too big to do the other way. My DH is the worst patient in the world and had almost no recovery time with the laparoscopic ones and minimal with the mesh. He now has no restrictions on lifting at all after recovery.

It really is just general surgery. I used Dr. Halpern out of Winthrop he came very highly recommended. He is very well respected at the hospital as well.

Thanks for the replies.
I'm trying to figure out how to find a doctor for my dad to do the surgery.
Couple of issues with he is having:
1. Crappy insurance - I believe he has medicare (the older person insurance)
2. Health - he is on blood pressure and cholesterol medicine and I believe he has to stop it a week or two before surgery
3. Surgical experience - he called a few doctors that he found in the Chinese newspaper (lol) and they all don't do the "3 hole method" - which I heard you need plenty of experience for.
If anyone knows of a good surgical doctor in the Queens/Flushing/Great Neck/Nassau area I would love to hear names.

Why don't you call up the hospital that you prefer in that area and ask what doctors take Medicare. That will help you narrow it down. My parents and husband have had multiple surgeries and I have never heard of them not taking their medication for an extended period of time. That is very dangerous. Laparoscopic surgery is very common place and would be weary of any doctor that told me they didn't know how to do that.

Yeah.
I think the issue is that with those type of medicine it makes the blood clot less. So theres danger with surgery. That's why he is supposed to stop the medicine.
My dad wants to wait until summer for surgery because he thinks that in the cold the "blood runs slower" so theres a higher chance of a problem if he stops his medicine.
But in the summer, the blood will run better.

But in the summer, the blood will run better.
The only issues with his medsnis if he's on a blood thinner. My father is on cholesterol medd and has a bunch of surgeries and was never off the cholesterol ones just the thinners for a VERY short period of time.
I was on thinners and had a c section. They only had me off them for 14 hrs.
