Would you want DC to follow in your career path?

Would you want/not want/encourage/dissuade your DC (or any other kids you know) to follow in the job/career you are in?

I'm in IT, so I think it's a broad enough category, and with a definitely need in the foreseeable future that I wouldn't stop them, and would help them if they showed legitimate interest. DS is interested in computers, but more of a graphics art angle rather than an IT angle, so that's cool with me.

Right now, DD is more interested in animal care of one type or another, so I'll definitely help her in that direction.

Investment Banking? Nope.

I rather my son learn a trade & work with his hands.

Would you want DC to follow in your career path?

Insurance Agent?
God no.. but if she wanted to, I wouldn't stop her. I mean heck I'd know the loop holes to avoid. Insurance is an industry that has industries within that you can literally live within for your whole life.

I know, I've done it.

You can travel or you can get stuck in one place forever. It's all about what you are willing to do, risk or give up. But it's also a man's world still where a nice face, nice arse, pretty heels and a sweet voice can get you farther than a great brain. Where being right and sticking with it is seen as bossy and assertive when you're a female and just a job as a man. Men get paid more than us and women are still either connected or pretty to look at. Few women help each other out but there are a few out there and I've been lucky enough to work with them. It's a rough game and a back stabbing atmosphere. It can be rewarding but its viewed harshly by the public and unappealing by most.

Yet it is the MOST important thing that makes the world go around.

As long as there's money or assets there will always be a need for insurance.

But I hope she just find something that makes her happy. No matter what it is. I'd be lying if I said that a large portion of me hopes its NOT insurance.

I'm a former elementary school teacher, I wouldn't mind my kids being teachers but ONLY if they left the island. There are just NO teaching jobs here, it's too competitive.

My DH is an electrical engineer (designs digital circuits) and it would be AMAZING if my kids followed in his career path. There are so many job opportunities across the country and it's also one of the highest paying jobs out of college with REALLY excellent growth potential. You can do very well financially in his field plus, you can also take the executive path (which my DH has been doing for a few years now) and become a manager, director, VP.

ETA - My son is too little right now to see what his interests are (he's only 3.5 yrs old) but my DD who is 8 shows a definite aptitude for math and sciences and she really enjoys learning about it. So we'll see, right now if you ask her she wants to open her own bookstore and bakery................which works for me too!! lol Chat Icon

I worked in Construction Management before I went to Law School. HE could do either. I think he would love to be in the Construction Field. He loves seeing my projects and all the cranes. I was the same way when I was a kid and going to my dad's projects.
