Explaining White Privilege to a Broke White Person

Explaining White Privilege to a Broke White Person
I love this article. I think it really explains privilege well.

I like this article and I think that it explains it well but the problem is that everyone is asking people yo understand and give up their White Privilege. I think it would be better received if people were asked to acknowledge all of their privilege.
For example, the author has white privilege. This may or may not have helped her to overcome her adversity which was poverty. But someone who is born middle or upper middle class but is black does not need to overcome the adversity of being poverty stricken. They need to overcome adversities that go along with being black. I think that the reason that people get so upset about this topic is because many, many people have adversities that they need to overcome so the terminology tends to imply that because you are white you have not faced adversity. You may not have faced adversity because of your skin color but may have faced many other adversities. The problem lies in the fact that no one should have to overcome adversity based on something that they can't change or shouldn't have to change - race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, weight etc. I think most white people would agree that it is certainly easier to be white than it is to be black in America. It's easier to be Christian in America than be Jewish but no one is asking me to check my Christian privilege at the door. I think it would be better received if people were being asked to check all their privilege at the door. Acknowledge all the things that you are lucky enough to have, that someone else may not, that make your life easier. Be more empathetic to the struggles that all people may have to face in their life.
Those are just my thoughts.

I don't think any of what you said was unfair.
I see that point - "white privilege" is a much more common term than say "gender privilege."
I don't have a problem altering my vocabulary to make it more inclusive of other types of privilege but I would ask anyone who is skeptical or "upset" to meet me halfway and work to get past those feelings. As a society we have a lot of work to do and there will only be more unrest demonstrations, etc. if people won't face these facts and work for a more equitable society.
