Wow - your dd eats a lot more and healthy things than mine! We are down to 0 veggies, apples the only fruit, and then macaroni, Perdue nuggets, bagels, and Cheerios. We cycle through those 4 foods. It's awful and has gotten worse. What's funny is that she will try EVERYTHING. She just finds everything disgusting.

DD was the same way from like birth (LOL)- to like 4 or 5.
Now she will eat broccoli, carrots and sugar snap peas.
That's about it in veges.
She will ask for an apple sometimes, but mainly she prefers cookies and stuff to anything healthy.

She barely eats meat- for a while I was calling her my vegetarian- but now she is back to eating burgers (which she was refusing for a LONG time). The only chicken she will eat is nuggets- nothing else. Not even chicken sandwiches at school.

She's definitely a picky eater and definitely find a lot of food disgusting like you said.

I'm not stressing it because she is healthy and a good weight.
She'll grow into her palette eventually. I doubt she will be 30 and only eating chicken nuggets. LOL

DD receives OT and speech. Our OT has been focusing on her eating issues more than speech. They thought it was a textural thing for a while but it seems it is just behavioral. She is very picky, but we have a good strategy in place that works.
We give her what we eat. We remind her that she can only get up from the table after eating a specific amount of food. Right now it's 5 bites of everything on her plate. So if she has a protein, veges and carbs it's 5 of each. Sometime she will eat the minimum, sometime she eats a lot more. I usually have to sit right next to her and encourage her through it so I don't eat until both DH and DD are done. If she eats more than the minimum we will often "surprise" her with dessert. Nothing crazy, but she knows when she is eating well and a "surprise" is coming. Other days she couldn't care less about dessert and after her 5 bites she is done!
It's exhausting, but we are in a much better place than we were just 3 months ago. 3 months ago we were working on just getting her to sit at the table without crying to get up.

Curious how you got to that point if you can share any specifics? I can't imagine her being able to do that. At this point, she will gag easily on things she ate fairly well until recently.

We started with just sitting with us at the table without crying. All she had to do was sit at the table, tell us one fact about her day and ask to be excused. We would prep her ahead of time to set her up for success. If she ate something while sitting great, but unless it was noodles and butter or chicken nuggets she often just got up. if she did the minimum we gave her a quarter of a graham cracker square and if she did anything more than the minimum she got 2. We worked our way up. After we got to 3 bites of each we expanded dessert options to also include 1 cookie or a small ice cream sandwich. Her choice which she really liked. I stress this took 3 months of being patient and remaining calm through. Some nights I wanted to pull my hair out.
We ruled out any textural or sensory issues. It was strictly behavioral. We came to that conclusion because when she was really hungry she would eat the same foods. DD never gagged on food though. She would sometimes chew and spit out, but that has decreased too since we would just replace it with another piece.

ETA: there are some foods we know she won't eat. Like she doesn't like tomato sauce. So we offer her butter or olive oil instead. We also know she doesn't like potatoes. So I'll give her rice or something else.

I'm at my wit's end with 4yo eating

Thank you for this thread. One of my twin DD's is doing this now, and it's so frustrating. She was a phenomenal eater as a baby until about 2 months ago. All of a sudden, she dismissed anything "green", dislikes meats, and says she "hates" things she used to devour. even fresh fruit. DH and I are at our wit's end. I'm so reassured by your post that this is behavioral/control
