Is there a way to find out who the registered owner of a vehicle is?
Long story short- my car was hit today will I was driving and the lady didn't stop. I have a photo of her driving, her car and her license plate number. Before calling my insurance, I figured I'd see if there was a way I could see who owns the car.
It's a NYS registered vehicle.

Is there a way to find out who the registered owner of a vehicle is?
You should file a police report and then call your insurance. If she left the scene I doubt you contacting her will make a difference.

No it's not public record. In the past if you knew a cop they could run the plate for you but I think that they get in trouble if they are caught doing that now.
Leaving the scene of an accident is a crime. Did she know that she hit you?

You can't, but the cops can.
Just give them the plate number and they will handle it. Leaving the scene is illegal, they will have to go after her

Your insurance can find them too. My sister was hit, the guy stopped but gave her wrong info. She had a picture of his car and plates. The insurance handled it all.

You could go see flash flash hundred yard dash at the DMV, but don't tell him any jokes.

If you filed a police report, they run the plate to get the info. When you pick up a copy of the report it should be on it. Probably not the driver since there's no way to prove who was actually driving, but the accident will be on the registered owner at this point. If for some reason the info is not on the report, insurance companies have investigators who look into these things, especially since this is a hit and run, they will not want to pay out to you, but more than likely go after them

Thanks everyone!
When I called my insurance they were able to look her up using the plate number. Luckily, she is insred. They gave me her name and policy number. My insurance started a claim with them. If she denies it, at least I have her name and I can take it from there.
Fingers crossed it goes smoothly!
