DS 2 gets car sick... So we've done this a few times. You need to remove the car seat, wash The cover (and anything else that can be washed) and then spray it liberally with febreeze. Also, move the buckles up and down and use a q-tip and Lysol to get into the little grooves. Finally, get a scented vent air freshener. Eventually the smell goes away (and then we take another road trip and he vomits again...). I can't even tell you how much vomit I've caught trying to save the car seat. We also keep an emergency vomit station in the car - Lysol wipes, plastic bags, febreeze, paper towels, change of clothes.

All of this and try to keep your car windows open a bit when you aren't driving it to air it out.

Put the carseat outside in the direct sunshine for as long as possible.
Also, call the company and you may be sent new straps if you get a nice rep :)

dd threw up all over her carseat
My 2 year old got terribly carsick on the way down to Virginia this summer. Puked alllllllll over his brand-new just-installed-that-morning convertible seat. It was so bad and I knew I'd never get the smell out completely that we just threw it out Totally worth it to get a brand new one. Expensive? yes, but I couldn't deal with the smell of puke and trying everything in my power to get rid of it.

thank you. I did take it apart and washed what i could, scrubbed the straps and let everything dry by the fire place lol
It's really just one part that smells the most. I was doing some research. I looked up tea tree oil b/c i have it and thought why not. I sprayed it a bit and in y car and hopefully that helps lol. DD had to sit in it today s I couldn't soak it, but maybe if it smells again I can spray it more liberally. It only smells up close.

You cannot use febreeze or Lysol to clean a car seat. You can only use a mild soap and must adhere to the seats specific instructions per the manual. Most say wash on gentle with a mild detergent and air dry. The straps are not allowed to be submerged or soaked in water or any chemicals. You can use wipes or a damp dish cloth with a dab of mild detergent (like blue dawn). Anything else is not advised. If you have washed your seat and/or straps with Lysol and febreeze I would suggest calling the company and seeing if they can send you new ones.

This. I can't tell you how many times DD puked in her infant seat. Those straps were the bane of my existence. I used to use water wipes and let everything air out. I'm pretty sure they still stink and she's out of the seat. Sorry OP, it stinks (literally) but it's safety over smelly

Yes! Chemicals or even too much water can damage the integrity of the straps and the seat. Follow the directions in the manual for cleaning and if you already used products on the straps, I would call the company and see if they will send you replacements.
