Trip Insurance- Death in Family

We have a trip coming up. We do not currently have trip insurance. My grandmother is being put in hospice. Does anyone know if I get trip insurance now would they cover if we need to cancel or interrupt trip due to death?
Is this considered a pre-existing condition that wouldn't be covered for death?

You need to purchase the insurance within a certain amount of time fromwhen you booked the trip.

Some airlines and hotels will assist in a death in the family situation though

I don't think it would matter that it is "pre-existing". It depends on the insurance policy you purchase - some will cover that, some won't. (ie Some only cover weather related cancellations/interruptions etc) Just read through it before purchasing if you still have enough time to buy it before your trip. Unfortunately, I had the "opportunity" to use trip insurance when my mother passed away and it was one small thing that helped at the time.

Most trip insurance needs to be purchased within a certain time period of traveling, and within a certain time period of paying the trip in full.

I'm sorry to hear about your Grandma :(
My Grandma was put in Hospice, and it was ultimately about 6 weeks before she passed.

IF you are flying Southwest, you can cancel up until like 30 minutes before and just get travel credit.

I agree about SW they are great with cancellations etc.
And the hotel/resort may work with you if you tell tehm your situation.
It's just good customer service.
Sorry about your grandma.

Typically you have to purchase trip insurance 7 days after booking.

There also may be provisions as to who in the family has died. (Policy may only cover if a person going on the trip has died, or first level family member.)

Again, YMMV and each policy is different so you have to look in detail. We've used and made a medical claim against a Travelguard policy - no issues dealing with them.

Re: Trip Insurance- Death in Family

Thank you everyone. Our biggest expenses are the non-refundable resort and the airfare. Good point with SW as we are flying them one way.

I was looking into the American Express trip insurance. I am able to purchase still. Just not clear on death policy and if pre-existing applies only to sickness or to death as well.

Hate for this to be looming over our upcoming trip. Chat Icon

So sorry to hear about your grandma. I would call the resort if the time comes and explain the situation.

Sorry about your grandma. As another posted mentioned, call the resort and ask if you could change your travel dates. I bought travel insurance several times but always within 14 days of booking my trip so as to get coverage for pre existing conditions. While I was researching travel insurance companies on cruise critic.com, I saw people mention Steve at Tripinsurancestore.com a lot. I haven't personally used him but apparently he is very resourceful and good at finding a policy that meets everybody's needs. If you explain your situation, him or other agents at this company may be able to find you a policy. GL.

ETA: Check with your credit card company that you used to pay for the trip and see if you have any coverage.
