Selling a home & pets
DH and I are having a disagreement about this. We are selling our home and have someone coming to see it tonight. We have 3 cats. I feel like we should take the cats out of the house for the showing. He thinks that's crazy.
I feel like cats are a turnoff to come people. I don't want to turn people off as soon as they walk in the door. Two of my cats will hide but the third one looooooooves people and will most certainly follow the people around the house.
Anyone that owns cats knows that corralling them is like an Olympic sport. DH doesn't want to have to do that every time someone comes to see the house. My attitude is we do what we need to do to get this house sold.

this.
only because there are people with allergies. you don't want to turn off a potential buyer before they even see the house.

I'd take them out. Many people are allergic to cats and definitely a deterrent. Litter boxes should go to.

I agree with your DH - it's a hassle to corral them every time someone comes to look at the house.
When we were selling our house I just made sure the litter box was clean, the room where it is didn't smell, and the cats were not visible. One of my cats hid and the other stayed out of the way.
If you have a cat that you think will follow people around then maybe hold the cat and just walk around the house staying out of the way of the showing.

I agree.
This. When we were house hunting I hated houses with cats. My DH and DD are allergic and we would have to rush in and out before it would become an issue.

I'd take them out as well. We had one cat when we were selling our co-op and we took him (as well as the litter box) out of there when we had our open house and private showings.

Our LO is allergic and it would be a HUGE turn off. He breaks out in hives.

We have a dog and when our house was on the market I would put him outside and then if they wanted to walk through the yard we moved him into a bedroom.
If the cats hide then I wouldn't go crazy but I would hide the litter boxes. That to me was a turn off when I looked at houses.

This is virtually impossible. You can't really hide a litter box when people are walking through every room of your house. Ugh, this is such a pain in the butt!!!

the cats live there so does their fur, IMO wont help removing them. Keep windows open to remove any pet odor

Re: Selling a home & pets
I don't know ..... As long as your house doesn't smell like animals, or the litter box it may be a waste of time and effort.
Anyone who walks through the door with a cat allergy will know immediately that you have them, even if they aren't in the house at that time. I can't be in a house w/ cats ........even if the cats are nowhere near me, and it's the 'cleanest' house ever - I'm miserable within 3 minutes.
Do you have wall to wall carpeting? If you have hardwood floors, I don't think I'd automatically veto a house b/c the current owner had cats ........if I had to come in and immediately make major renovations just to breathe, that would be different, but again, taking the cats our of the house for a showing won't make a difference to a person like that .......

Hardwood except bedrooms. But they aren't allowed in the bedrooms.

Take them out.
When we were selling our townhouse we took our dog and left the house for each showing. I wouldn't leave pets of any type (that are not in tanks or cages) free to roam a house when people are walking through.
Especially if your one cat loves people - many people are allergic or just outright don't like cats and would most likely not appreciate a cat following them around the house. My DH and my DS are both allergic, and my DS is scared of cats. The few times we walked through houses with cats there we pretty much high tailed it out of there within 5 minutes.

Re: Selling a home & pets
People looking at houses MUST realize that some individuals own pets. I would think they would clarify this information prior to visiting if their allergies or fears are that severe.
I would, however, take the pets out for their own safety; you don't know who is going to be opening what doors. The cats could become scared or curious and run out of the house.

That's fine but owners also have to realize that they will be limiting their buyer pool unless they take ALL steps to reduce the issue and that includes taking the pets out.
When we look at houses we will know immediately if a house has pets just by the smell (regardless of how "clean" the owner thinks their house is). My wife will start sneezing being in a house with cats and will start even sooner if the cats are present.
If you choose to have pets you have to understand that selling will be more difficult than for somebody who doesn't have pets.
