Flies - need your help

Ok, so I am freaking out a bit here. Yesterday there were a ton of flies in our house when I woke up. It totally freaked me out and it was gross. I was on a hunt and killed all that I could find but 2.

I tried figuring out what it could be from either a) the garbage (which we brought out Sunday night) or b) a bag of vegetables from the garden that I promptly threw away yesterday.

After this I scrubbed the kitchen top to bottom. We have no pets and I made sure there wasn't any rotting food in the house. I just now found (and KILLED) 4 more flies in the kitchen.

I am totally FREAKED OUT. Any recommendations? Any ideas where they could be coming from?

You could buy a flie catcher that you hang from the ceiling...the flies stick to it and then you throw it out. You probably had one or two flies and then they multiplied...we had a similiar problem Chat Icon You could buy the flie catchers at Home Depot...it really works and its not expensive!

Re: Flies - need your help

I had a similar problem a while ago. But they were not flies. They were some other kind of bugs that also happened to fly. It turns out that after a few days, I finally figured out where they came from....they were in the rice bag. I usually pour the rice in a canister for future use and I bought the bag with those things in it. Just awful!
So, needless to say I threw out all the rice. Now when I go shopping I make sure to really look at the rice bag and make sure that I don't see anything in there other than rice.

Good luck with your problem!

I just had a similar problem but in the bathroom. Are they really small?

These were something called "drain flies". There is a picture of them on this website:

drain flies

They live in the drain and live off the food etc. that gets washed away (ewww) but they are harmless. I threw bleach down there and ammonia (separate times) and they disappeared. I also got some stuff from Lowe's that claims to clean your pipes of "organic buildup". I'd say that it's either this or what DLD4E said about the cupboard. Good luck!
