Moms of 2 or more - toddler bed vs second crib

Currently 5.5 months pregnant with baby #2. DS will be almost 27 months when the new baby is due to arrive. He sleeps comfortably in his crib and has never attempted to climb out - I'm sure the fact that he's still in a sleep sack has something to do with it - and I'm torn about what to do for baby # 2. I'm very reluctant to move DS from his crib since he sleeps well in there and sleep was a struggle for us for so so long early on, but I'm also having a hard time justifying shelling out for another crib.

For those who have been in this situation - did you bite the bullet and buy a new crib? Rent one? Put new baby in pack and play?

My dd was a little younger than that when my ds was born she was 18 month and slept incredible in a crib...I thought about going to a toddler bed but we did decide to buy another crib...we bought our second crib at ikea and it was a $100 and it was perfect...the first crib we have my inlaws spent a fortune on and honestly the ikea crib was just as nice...she stayed in it till just past her 3rd birthday sink felt we got out moneys worth

I say go for the 2nd crib. My 1st 2 boys were 14 months apart so we definatly did 2 cribs. DS 3 and 4 are 26 months apart and we did the 2 cribs again. My reasoning is DS3 sleeps great in his crib and doesn't try to climb out. Why kick him out of the comfort for the new baby to have a crib?
He will be 3 next week and still in the crib. I wouldn't buy a very expensive crib for the new baby.

I agree 100% w crib from ikea & converting it to a toddler bed is easy.

Dd1 was 24 months when dd2 was born. We bought a new crib/furniture set for dd2. Both girls have the cribs that convert to full size beds and match their furniture.

14 months later dd1 is still in her crib at 3 years, 2 months. She's never attempted to climb out and is very content. If it ain't broke.....

My girls are 2.5 years apart. We moved dd1 into a toddler bed. We really didn't have another option since they were sharing a room. We had a very easy transition to the bed and when I ended up with an unexpected cs I was so glad to not have to worry about lifting my 2yo. The downside for us was a few months later she stopped napping. Who knows if she would have kept it up in the crib or not but it was frustrating.

Is the first crib convertible?

I'd buy another crib. 27 months is still young. I had my second when DS was 28 months old. He stayed in his crib until he potty trained (at 34 months old) and then we converted his crib to a toddler bed.

Thanks for confirming my initial thoughts ladies Chat Icon To answer your question - yes, the first crib is convertible however, I did not purchase the conversion kit when we bought the crib and now the crib has been discontinued at pottery barn kids (ugh... lesson learned!)

We'd likely get a new crib that converts for DS to put in his new room and just leave his current crib in the nursery where the new baby will go since it matches the changing table.

appreciate everyone's input!

DS attempts to raise his leg but hasnt yet gotten out of crib @ 18 mo.
he also chews his crib. like-- BAD.
we do have the conversions as well.

However, if we do have baby #2 we've already discussed getting him a toddler bed as he is in a cot for naps at day care, we think as long as there is nothing dangerous in his room he will be OK.

Since my older dd's crib converted into a full size bed, I bought a new crib.

I would get a convertible crib...thats what we did. DD is 3.5 and still in her crib; I am glad I didnt put her in a bed yet. It is peace of mind knowing if you are dealing with your newborn, that DS cant come out of his bed to bother you...or even the newborn in the middle of the night.

Re: Moms of 2 or more - toddler bed vs second crib

We moved each of my boys when the next was coming. My 2nd and my 3rd were only 2 1/2 years apart. My 2nd did great in a bed!!

However, each of my kids were in the rock n play for the first few months because of reflux when they were babies.

So maybe use a Rock n Play or Pack n Play for a bit to stretch it out if you don't want to buy another crib. Chat Icon

I think it depends on the kid. We moved DD1 into a bed at 22 months, bc we were expecting DD2. It was a flawless transition and I don't regret it one bit. But DD2 is now roughly the same age and there is NO WAY I'd trust her in a bed, lol.

Re: Moms of 2 or more - toddler bed vs second crib

My kids slept in the pack n play (with a better mattress that I bought separately) for about 6 months or so, which can buy some time before you'll need the crib.

I was lucky someone we knew was getting rid of their crib & gave it to us so we didn't have to buy a second one. My kids both still sleep in a crib at 3 and 16 months.

I plan to move my older son to a bed sometime before he turns 4. Then when I have my next baby, he/she can sleep in the pack n play for the first few months like the others did & then move into the crib.

My girls are 2.5 years apart. We were moving DD1 into a new room and leaving the nursery, so we also moved her to a twin bed. She slept amazing in the crib and never tried to climb out. Needless to say it was a rough transition for her. Even now, almost a year later, she is better but still wakes up at night. I probably would have kept her in the crib for a little longer if I could've.

If you are going to have your little one in a bassinet for a few months before moving them to the crib I would try the toddler bed for your oldest
