Managing tattling vs when DS really does need help
DS is 4 years old and comes running to me quite often, whether its playing with friends or siblings. "They did this/they took this/they hit me/they arent sharing" etc. How do I manage and explain the difference between tattling and getting him to understand that when he really needs help with another child I will help them. I dont expect him to just sit there and take it if a child is doing something harmful, but at the same time I want him to learn just to work it out. Or is this too young for them to grasp the difference?

I've told my little guy "if it's not dangerous, you don't need to tell me". Def doesn't always work though lol

LO is 3 years old and I had this conversation recently with a bunch of moms. I decided that as annoying (LOL) as it is, I'd rather him come tell me and I'll deal with it on an individual basis. I think eventually he'll learn what he needs to tell me and what he doesn't.

I agree with this
at 4, 3 or even 5, they're still figuring out how to work things out.
We tell our son to tell a grown up when the other kids are not sharing, grabbing things away, cheating at games. We've explained how to work things out on his own first, but the alternative after he's past his first line of reasoning mechanisms for him is to either sit there and lose out on whatever, or blow up and use his hands.
