Baby talk

DD is 8 months and babbles every vowel combo imaginable and says some single consonant sounds- ba, baw, ga, ge, wa, ma and says hi and yeah. She does NOT string any of these together. No "mama, dada, baba." Her inflection is almost always appropriate- like she's having a convo in another language when you speak with her. She squeals, laughs and yells when she's angry.

I feel like she should definitely be stringing constants together by now, no?? I'm starting to worry!

Exactly, she's 8 months old.

And don't for a moment compare to another 8 month old who happens to be writing their college thesis and running marathons by now. All kids are different and there's a gigantic range of what's normal. Chat Icon

Thanks. My SIL has a baby a month younger and I'm told he babbles nonstop. My MIL kept trying to get DD to say "dada" the other day and she seemed surprised when she wouldn't. She's an EI therapist so it got me a little concerned.

My sister has/had major developmental issues which were made worse from her not receiving proper interventions so I'm kind of on high alert for these things.

If I'm not mistaken, they wouldn't even give you EI for speech at this age based on what you said.

I'm sure everything is fine

Pretty sure this is true. The only reason my 11 month old qualified for speech is for feeding issued due to her delays. They said it was difficult to find someone who took babies this young.

Oh no, I'm not looking to put her in EI- my MIL is an early intervention therapist who sees a huge range of delays in her line of work. So the fact that she seemed to imply that it was strange is what got the wheels turning in my head that something might be off (I hadn't really thought about it before).

Re: Baby talk

Sounds like she's doing fine to me. I don't think that's a delay at all.
