Would you use a used breast pump?
My Medela pump started becoming weak when I had DS#2 so I need to get a new one for baby #3. My friend said I could have hers.
Do you think it is ok to use someone's used pump?
I could get new tubing. Since I am not working, I don't need to pump a huge stash, just enough so DH and other people could feed the baby when I am not home.

Have you checked to see if your insurance covers one? I probably wouldn't unless it was closed system which Medela is not.

Re: Would you use a used breast pump?
Absolutely! You can just get all new parts. I mean they even rent pumps to use.

Re: Would you use a used breast pump?
Absolutely! I gave mine to my SIL after she found out her insurance wouldn't cover it. I sent her the info on the replacement parts (about $60) and it was like having a brand new pump!

I agree with all of this. Medela is an open system and I know aside from the tubing milk gets in other places. I did t even reuse mine from dd1 for dd2 bc of it.

For a Medela pump, no, I wouldn't (regardless of it was coming from a friend, a relative, etc.) because its an open system and the first user's milk could still be in the machine. If it were a closed system pump (like Hygeia or Spectra), then yes. I'd just buy replacements for the basic parts.

I would only use a used pump if it was a closed system- the Medela is an open system so I definitely would not use it.

Re: Would you use a used breast pump?
Yes. I did from my SIL (only way I'd consider it being that I know her medical history). I did get new tubes and phalanges. It is an open system... So milk could hypothetically get into the pump interior... But it would travel up the tubes and would have to retrograde travel... BUT, we did have 2 years between our kids. Everything critical would have been gone/dried/inactivated by then (even Hep c will not last more than a few days). All in all, I used her pump that she used for her 2 kids for my 3 kids. It worked beautifully and everyone is healthy.
If you are not going to pump much, price out renting a pump from a pharmacy/hospital supply store.

Not unless it was a closed system. Even then, idk if I would trust it, but most things I don't like used.

Re: Would you use a used breast pump?
No not if I could avoid it. I have no idea whether it's sanitary or not, but for peace of mind I'd probably get a new one.

DH said our insurance probably covers the breast pump.
Do you get it from places like CVS and just your insurance card to pay?

Call the insurance company. Some pay back after the fact, but mine required you to order from a list of recommended places. We wound up ordering from Byram Healthcare online and didn't pay a cent out of pocket. Also, some insurance companies won't let you order until like 30 days before your due date. Mine let me order whenever I wanted, so I had it months in advance.

Re: Would you use a used breast pump?
Absolutely. I mean I wouldn't use one from someone I didn't know probably, but my best friend gave me her Medela which I liked so much better than the one I got free from insurance. So I left hers at work (I pumped up to 3 times a day there) but brought it home on the weekends and used mine at home the rest of the time. I mostly nursed at home during the week. Bought all new tubing and other parts.

Re: Would you use a used breast pump?
If I were you, I'd try to get a new one through insurance. I wouldn't feel comfortable using an open system pump that's used. I remember being annoyed because of milk back flowing into the tubes of my old Medela. If it was a closed system pump, I would be more comfortable with a used one.
Your insurance company can recommend some DMEs that they work with and then you can call a few to see what the options are.

This. Ever see the mold that can grow in a pump? Luckily my insurance covers pumps.

Yes they rent out pumps but only closed systems--not an open system like a Medela PISA

I did not know that! Interesting. I thought they had a way to sterilize it or clean it out properly. I made sure to get a closed system pump- Spectra 9/s2- because I knew I wouldn't be able to figure out how to clean an open system one.

No call your insurance company and see what companies they work with. I went through edge park. You could even try just looking on their website to Dr if your insurance is listed and if so which pumps are covered. You give your info, they request a script from your ob (or you can ask for one and scan it in yourself) and they'll mail it right to you.

Do you like the Spectra?? I have a Hygeia and a Medela PISA but I wanted to get a Spectra for my next child. I hear great things about it.
