Starting to wean off of nursing.

How was your experience?

I still produce a lot of milk. I plan to give my dd both bm and whole milk. BUT I want to be done with pumping (or at least almost done..especially during the day) once teaching starts in September.

What? How? When? Chat Icon

Do I just go as long as I can in between pumping sessions, while cutting out nursing? Do I pump for less time instead?

Are you home now? If so, I'd try to just nurse as needed with no pumping. Your body will quickly self regulate. I'm no help with actual weaning as my 2 year old still nurses.

I stopped pumping at 14 months. At 12 months, I cut out one pumping session. Then another at 13 months. At 14 months, I cut out the last session. I think it's safe to cut out one session a week.

Eta: I'm a teacher too and the last time I pumped was in June when he was 14 months. By the time, I went back in September, I didn't need to pump anymore even with DS nursing 5 times a day during the summer.

Interesting. I never thought of doing that. I wish now I had done this at the beginning of summer, but i think she was too young.

So if I only nurse when needed, which is way less now, it'll gradually decrease anyway. I get it. Chat Icon

So did you ever feel too full and have to express? How was overnight?

I never pumped when I was home with my DS and I never felt full. You might be slightly uncomfortable at first, but it will regulate quickly. Pumping (in addition to nursing) will not regulate your supply. If you're looking to not have to pump at work, I'd stop pumping at home now.
