3.5 month old - still sleeps like a new born, help!

Ds is almost 4 months old and he stil wakes every 2-3 hours throughout the night. He was doing pretty good for a little while, with a 4-6 hour stretch to start the night, but now he's reverted back to waking more frequently. I think he's teething, but not sure if that's what's causing it, bc usually he nurses and then goes right back to sleep without seeming to be in pain. He's ebf, and I've tried to give him formula before bedtime, but he won't take a bottle. I'm hoping when we start giving him baby food next month it will help. Anyone have a similar experience with an EBF baby, and did starting solids help at all?

My DS slept like that until 6 months when we did CIO/introduced solids. From 4-6 months, I was probably getting 4 hours of broken sleep a night. I was a zombie.

DD was like that until well after 6 months.
I think it's pretty normal
Solids did nothing. She was still waking up every few hours

My DS was like that until 5 months old. Solids didn't help my DS either. I don't know if you can do this but I moved his bath time a little later to 7:30/8 and he was in bed by 8/8:30. After a few nights of that, he starting sleeping longer stretches.

Thanks, that is our routine. Bath around 8/8:30, followed by nursing and then right to sleep. It had been working great when he was around 2 months old, but now it doesn't seem to make a difference.

Sad to hear solids probably won't help. Was hanging onto that wishful thinking!

3.5 mo is still really young. It may just take more time.

I think one of your issues is that you're feeding the baby and then putting him right down. You need to separate feeding from sleep or you train the baby to fall asleep while drinking. Then when he wakes up in the middle of the night, he needs to eat to fall back to sleep. Try reading Precious Little Sleep for more insight.

I didn't think he was doing that bad until i checked my almost 4 yo dds baby book And saw that I had written that she was sleeping about 8 hours by 3 months, but she used to take a bottle of formula before bed, so I thought maybe that might be what made the difference.

Chat Icon this!

My ebf baby who will be 1 yr in about 3 weeks, still wakes up throughout the night, and we started solids at 6 months. He was a magical-sttn-baby for the 1st month, but after that every single night he has waken up for the last 10 something months. But he used to wake up every 2 hrs, now he's waking up like every 3 1/2 hrs, yay for the little bit of progress Chat Icon At this point though, I'm so used to not having a full night of sleep.

With DS1, he'd rarely wake up at night, he was formula fed though.

But I do have to say, I've heard and read many experiences and it seems to be very uniquely of the baby if they do wake up through the night, how many times, for how long, or if they don't at all.

My DS slept like a newborn until 9.5 months. He cut a LOT of teeth early. I think that's why. But anyway 3.5 months is still young and all babies are different. Try to hang in there.

Re: 3.5 month old - still sleeps like a new born, help!

I hate to tell you this but the younger one did this from about 4 months old until 11 months old when I made him CIO. I'd put him to sleep at 8 or so, then he'd cry at least 3 times overnight, if not more. Like every 3 hours like you said. I'd try to calm him down in different ways but nothing worked but BF, and I enjoyed the time with him so I'd just do it so he'd go back to sleep fast & I could get back to sleep. I think it was a combo of needing more food (solids which I didn't start til like 7 months old) and habit and just loving to BF & cuddle with me during the night & I'd indulge him because I missed him during the day & felt guilty about being gone all day so it was our relaxing time together. But around 11 mo I was like, ok I gotta stop this, I'm too tired, so he CIO and it just took a couple of nights. But yeah that was the reality for most of D's first year, waking up all night long. I was definitely an enabler though lol!

Its so hard not to be an enabler though! I love cuddling w ds too and it's hard to hear him cry, so I'm not ready for CIO yet. I thought he would be my good sleeper, but now it looks like dd beat him at that. And she's actually never been a great sleeper, so it's just less and less sleep for me Chat Icon Chat Icon

Same here with my 4 month old. Formula , solids, swaddling, magic sleep suit, nothing works for this little one. Pretty sure I'm slowly dying from being tired Chat Icon DH and I ask, why do we feel worse and worse every day? Supposed to be getting better Chat Icon

The really weird thing that I don't get is that he used to sleep 4-5 hours without waking every night. He even slept 6 hours a few times and almost 8 hours once. So I know he physically can do it. I wonder if maybe it is a growth spurt or teething related. But either way, it seems like it's normal, which is both good and bad to hear. Hoping he'll sleep better sooner than later, but seems a good chance it will be later!
