Job spinoff
Is there an age where you would feel like its not worth it to leave a job to find something else? Like, you don't hate your job, it pays okay, but you've been there so long and you may as well just stick it out until you retire or move or whatever? Is it pointless to leave an unfulfilling job (where you won't really find comparable pay elsewhere) because you're in your 40's, 50's, 60?
Just curious...

I'm in my 40s and I would leave. But when I get into my 50s that view would probably change.

This is exactly where I am right now.
I'm 49 and have been in my job a long time. I don't make great money (I could make more if I switched jobs and went somewhere else). However, I have great flexibility with my time--basically, I make my own hours and my boss is more than generous with time off. I know if I go somewhere else, I will lose that and for me at this point in my life that is more important.
Plus, I'm lazy and don't feel like going through the hassle of looking for another job. LOL. But if the right opportunity presented itself, I might consider leaving.

Re: Job spinoff
I haven't left because of my kids nothing to do with age. In 5 years or so when my kids are well into high school I may take a risk. But on the other hand I guess when college costs come and I'm 15 years or so from retiring I may think differently.

Re: Job spinoff
I am almost 50, have been here 21 years. I make decent money, have excellent benefits, job security. Love/hate the job, it's just a job not a career and I get to leave it behind when I walk out the door. Basically I can stay here until I retire. Job security and benefits are more important as I get closer to retire.

Re: Job spinoff
Unless I had a pension, I would never stick with a job just for comfort, even if I was well into my 50's/60's. Even if I had a pension, depending on how long I've been vested in it, I probably wouldn't stay with a job that was only partially fulfilling, regardless of my age.
I'm nowhere near retirement so this MIGHT change as I get older but eh.

Honestly I'm mid 30s and sometimes I feel like this!! My husband is the real breadwinner. I have a decent job with good benefits, decent pay, easiest commute in the world. I FAR from love my job but honestly just don't care sometimes. I'm so burnt out of my field in general (law) that I can't imagine starting over somewhere new. I'll probably just stay here until a change is forced.

Another consideration for me is that there aren't a whole lot of jobs in my field here on LI (good paying ones at least). With my level of experience, I'd have to go to the city for that. I didn't want to make that commute when I was in my 20s, and I certainly don't want to do it as I push 50.

Same here, word for word - I am 40 and like my job as it pays well and is only 20 min from my house - but there are days I feel so un-challenged. I've had several attorneys from court tell me to switch to larger firms or firms that have more lucrative areas or what I used to do at an older firm (prof malpractice defense) but the idea of commuting to Manhattan and dealing w/ new a-holes makes me think twice..

Re: Job spinoff
i'm 43, job hunting, and planning a few major changes in my life... going back to school to finally get a BA and buying my first house BY MYSELF.
i would change jobs so long as i have the ability to work. i've done it so many times in my life that i'm not afraid of starting over, but i am afraid of the job hunting process.

I would change job if it made sense to me....at any age! In my mid/late 40's. I am far from retirement. I probably would not change job 2 years to retirement.
