Brexit

Is anyone following this story?

The UK is voting today on if they should leave the EU. Their Leave campaign says there are too many immigrants in the UK.

I don't think it would be a good thing if they leave, but I find it interesting because it's similar to what's going on with our own election.

I, personally, don't think it will pass.

Brexit

its more than just immigrant issue. it's a lot of things. yes, I've been following.

Good for them for voting and voicing their opinion. Will it pass, who knows? much like when Scotland wanted to get independence. Its the act of freedom..

Uh, yeah there is more involved, but the immigrant issue is a pretty major force of it.

I feel really bad for some of my colleagues. Some couldn't vote (here for more than 15 years) and applied for their German citizen citizenship months ago. Others were able to vote, but if it passes may have difficulties staying here depending on what happens. There is also an exchange program for students here to go over to The UK to study that's going to be difficult to work out the paperwork if this happens.

It's a bad move really. I got up early to watch the results.

Sad day. I guess this is what happens when people vote with emotions instead of facts? I know it's democracy, but some logic is needed.

But no one seems to know what the ramifications are of them leaving? I know the pound is the lowest its been in years, but aren't they going to spend the foreseeable future navigating just HOW to leave the EU?

Re: Brexit

Can you pleases explain why you think it is sad? I remember back in college taking classes with one of the architects of the EU. I told him 20 years ago that I foresaw this happening now. I think it is better for the UK, but worse for the EU. For people who were on work visas it will be bad for them personally. But for maintaining the country, I think it is the best option.

The majority of UK voters didn't agree with you so that means they voted without logic?

I don't have a ton of time to give a better response, but here goes...

As Kitten pointed out, it wasn't really well thought out. Let's leave the EU! What's the plan? I don't know, but let's leave the EU! Sorry, but don't you need a plan for such a big idea?

There are facts that many experts put forth only to be dismissed by parts of the population because they are sick of the establishment telling them what to do. When did people become so dismissive of facts? What is happening in this world?

In my own personal opinion, I find this rise of right wing politics worrying. Now that Cameron has resigned, what's next? Boris Johnson? *shudder*. Between this and the recent Austrian almost election of a Neo-Nazi party almost getting majority, it's a bit too close for comfort. And worrying.

For us, this can/will affect my husband's career as well. He is in British law, but practices in the EU. There will be no need for this anymore because opening businesses in the rest of the EU, and other businesses coming from the EU to the UK, will not be done easily. It really limits trade.

It's not better for the country at all. Pensions, mortgages, the stock market, etc will all be affected. And last I checked xenophobia is not the best thing.

If I come across a good article, I'll post it, but I'm kind of short on time today.

Yes, I don't think they used facts, only a gut reaction. And the majority was 52%. People out of the U.K. For more than 15 years were not able to vote. Most of them are in the EU. I don't consider that very fair, but that was the rule going in. There was a diagram showing the demographics of the voters and I found that very interesting.

It's the second pic.

Brexit

I'm honestly shocked the vote went this way. Although it was very close. I have a very good friend that lives in the north of England. She was very pro Exit. Everyday there was a post about it on FB. Clearly she had her reasons for it.

What I think is going to happen now is that there will be some economic repercussions that many that voted Exit did not foresee coming. And people are not going to be happy. Those working legally in the EU may now have to return to England. Unemployment may skyrocket higher than it is now. People will then start questioning the Brexit vote. Either way, Britain just voted themselves into turmoil. My main concern is how much the stock market is going to go down when it opens in 15 minutes.

Re: Brexit

This seems like a fairly good explanation of some of the pros and cons of various aspects of staying or leaving the EU:

From what I saw - one of the biggest promises of the Brexit campaign was that leaving the EU would free up millions the health service, and now the leader of the movement is backtracking.

I think the UK just put a noose around its neck. I believe the cons of the UK leaving far outweighs the pros, especially economically. The grass isn't always greener on the other side of the fence.

The DJIA did drop, but not as drastic as I thought it might have, and so far it seems to be pretty steady at around -400 points for the day. (about 2%) Some of the foreign markets are seeing a 7% or more drop.

Re: Brexit

i have a follow up question.

if the EU is so "wonderful" and leaving it such a bad idea, then why have i heard so much talk that the EU will purposely make leaving hard as a way of sending a message to other countries to not leave.

doesn't that mean that there are other counties who want to leave and doesn't that mean that the EU is worried that other strong countries will want to leave?

why punish a country for leaving? isn't that being a bit of a bully?

also, isn't switzerland a country outside of the eu and their economy is kicking ass? why can't the uk do the same?

from what i've read and heard... and not having any ties to anything across the pond, my gut tells me that this will be a good thing. i hope i'm right. but what do i know.

DH is wondering if this will effect Scotland and North Ireland. He thinks they may ask for a referendum to do another vote about seceding from the UK.

It shouldn't be so easy to leave if you want to. They signed an agreement in the beginning. If everyone left because they wanted to, that wouldn't be very fair to the other countries. It also results in the whole economy of the EU collapsing. This is why Grexit didn't happen, and why Germany did bailouts for them.

I wouldn't say that it's a punishment for leaving, but rather why should you get all the benefits and leave when you want to and screw others?

Switzerland isn't in the EU, but it's in the EEA. It's confusing and I can't explain it, but I get it. Here's a diagram to help you out:

I'm also not into ecomonics, so my explanations aren't the best.

Just read on buzzfeed that someone who voted to leave, voted that way because he thought his vote wouldn't matter and now he's worried.
