Spin off to post about making life easier
Has anyone tried following the Konmari method? I've heard so much about it and how, if followed, it means doing "one big tidying" and never having to do it again. Wondering if anyone has any success stories with this method. Sounds too good to be true and also like a lot of work...right now, I'll stick to my love affair with wine to make my life easier!!

Spin off to post about making life easier
When I listened to the audiobook, she kind of lost me with the way she folds socks, but I like the idea of getting rid of things that don't bring joy. I try to apply it when I get rid of stuff.

I actually asked for this book for my birthday. I'm wondering how she approaches the gear associated with having children-I really try to limit the amount of "stuff" I get for my daughter, but it obviously still amounts to a great deal of stuff.
For example, I'm hoping to start potty training in a few weeks-I ordered her a step stool so that can actually sit on the toilet, a small potette with the bags for when we're out of the house, and underwear. But it's still "stuff."

Re: Spin off to post about making life easier
I own this book and am in the process of konmaring my home. I've gone through my clothing, my books, and my kitchen. I have to do my papers. I have not gotten to my konmomo either, but I am not as worried about that part because I am not really a stuff person. My papers are another story entirely and I am stuck on them. I have written many posts about paper clutter. The thing is, that even though it is not fully organized, I know where all of the papers are located. I think my issue is that I don't have a filing cabinet. I just have a file box, but it really needs work. She also wrote a follow up book called sparks joy. I would like to read it too. I follow a Konmari group on Facebook. It is really inspiring.

Re: Spin off to post about making life easier
My house is so far gone at this point that I would have to take a 7 month leave of absence from work to do something like this and we just can't afford it. Or set it on fire, burn the house and all it's contents to the ground and start from scratch.
Oh and if this woman ever saw my house and the clutter and disorganization she would lose her will to live. ...

Agree with LSP. You are brilliant!
Also, my house looks about the same! I blame it on the boys (DS and DH)!

This exactly. I am overwhelmed by my own house! I can't imagine someone like this coming in.

Re: Spin off to post about making life easier
I had to look this up bc I'd never heard of it. Definitely too much for me. I will share my own method that has now worked for over 24 hours! First, arrange a fairly serious injury for dh (or anyone else that contributes to your clutter) and then invite company over which forces you to do a big cleanup. I seriously can't keep things clean with dh around, he's always doing some big project and leaving stuff everywhere. Love the finished projects but could live without all the pieces filling my dining room, kitchen, etc. With him somewhat out of commission it's much easier to keep things decluttered.

All of this. And even if I had the time off to do it, I can think of 100 things that I would rather be doing. I've accepted the fact that I'll never be a neat person or have a decluttered house.

she doesnt address that in the book just so you know. the book sounds like she lives alone. but i see on wikipedia she is married and had a child in 2015. but the book really seems written for someone without kids. i know it was way easier for me to use her method BEFORE kids. the #1 take away from that book is just GET RID OF STUFF, especially when it serves no purpose or joy.

I have trouble doing this. I'm not a hoarder but I feel bad about throwing out useful stuff even if I don't particularly want it. I intend to either donate or give it all away to someone I can think of who needs it, but all too often the pile grows and sits there. Bad I know. Like one of my neighbors threw out a gorgeous changing table in perfect condition so I took it and gave it to a friend who was having her first baby and could use it. I can't see throwing out something like that, but I also don't feel like holding a garage sale every month either or always trying to find someone who can use specific things. Im also not good at determining what's clutter and what I should keep. I think I need a professional organizer to come help me!!! I accumulate stuff way too fast and am not good at managing it.

My DH is the same. He's messier than my 2 year old!
