saving photographs digitally ??

I have so many photographs. Some I will save but there are much more..... 100s really that I want to save digitally and get rid of the hardcopy.

What is the best way to do this? Take it all somewhere? how much would something like that costs? where? Or do I scan it myself on my computer printer - scanner or my ipad scanner app?

Eta: sorry, I didn't realize they were hard copies that need to be turned into digital. I have a scanner that's part of my printer...but if you have a lot it's probably easier to take them somewhere
