Solids?

I'm sure this has been asked a million times but when did you start your baby on purees? DD just turned 6 months and I started her last week. People are looking at me like I have 6 heads when I say she just started. I'm just listening to what the ped told me.

She is in the 67th percentile for weight and takes 6-7oz of formula every 3.5 hours.

Am I that behind?!

Not behind at all. That is the current recommendation from AAP and WHO and had been for a few years. I started both my girls on one meal a day at 6 months, 2 at 7 months and so on. My second rarely even got 3 meals most days until almost a year bc we were always running around or she'd sleep through a meal.

I don't think you are. My dd is a little over 5 months and has not started yet. Ped said this month we could start oatmeal only. Purees at 6 months.

I think we started at 4 months maybe. It was definitely before 6.

Re: Solids?

I waited until 6 months with my first two and I plan to with #3. I don't think there's any real reason to start earlier. Some people just choose to.

As per my ped, we started cereal at 5 months than slowly transitioned to purees at the end of 5 months. She is now a little over 6 months and we are still doing single ingredient purees.

Re: Solids?

We just started talking about it at her 5 month visit. Doctor told me I could start anytime during the month, no need to rush into it right away. So in a nutshell sometime between 5-6 mos. 6 mos. is not too late at all.

Solids?

Not at all. My first didn't have a stitch of solids til she was 6 months. My 9 month old still hasn't had solids due to low tone in her trunk and feeding issues that stem from her brain injury but my plan was to start her at 6 months as well.

Earlier than 6 months is becoming outdated info so older parents may not be aware.

Re: Solids?

6 months is fine.... I started my younger son with solids at 6.5 months & he's had no problem getting used to eating & his growth & development have been great.

Re: Solids?

I waited too.

Now dd is 8 months and she eats like a grown woman lol!! I waited until I thought she was ready and we went by her cues and it worked out perfectly.

Solids?

We started around 5.5-6 months. Everything I read said to wait until 6 months. I introduced them a little early since he was always hungry and BM was no longer satisfying him enough - he was literally up every 1-2 hours overnight to nurse and I couldn't keep up!

ETA: My DS was eating all real table food by 8 months so I would not worry about it!

Re: Solids?

I think in general, as parents, we sometimes get excited to get started on solids and see how our littles react so we start "early". Which just means earlier than recommended. Every child/parent is different and it doesnt matter much when they start. I would have liked to start at 4 months, but my LO has eczema and a milk allergy so we (mom, dad and ped) decided to wait until at LEAST 6 months to start just to make sure we aren't rushing him and aggrvating any of his allergies. He gets to start next month.

I fed actually solids to both of my boys but I did it around 6 months. U did great by waiting until she was 6 months to feed her food. That's the usual time when babies have better control of their neck and can seat up by themselves or with little help which is what you need if you want to feed them food.

We started when our babies were ready. We tried with DS at 4.5 months and he gagged at the site of the spoon. At 5 months he ate like a champ.

DD HATED her bottle and took to solids at closer to 4 months. By 6 months she was basically eating everything (meaning table foods).

The recommendation is 6 months so I don't see what's odd about waiting until the 'recommended' time. I don't understand the rush.

Thank you all so much. Daycare in particular is making me feel like I've failed her by not introducing purees earlier. You guys made me feel so much better (as usual)!

Our ped recommends 4 months and we gave her some oatmeal at that time and maybe sweet potato, but I didn't really start introducing solids until closer to 7 months.

I will start at 4 months, though he has already had rice and banana. My pediatrician wants us to start at 4 months. Not sure why some prefer 6 months vs. 4 months
