Getting out of car seat straps!

Omg

My little guys gonna be two in July and he's such a scuttlebutt!!!!!

His latest trick is to wriggle his arms out of the highchair straps and out of the car seat. He's just about leaning totally out of the seat!

I make the straps tighter after I buckle him in but he still manages to escape.

Anyone else have this happen? What can I do?

Getting out of car seat straps!

I'm thinking the car seat straps are not tight enough. My DS cannot move at all once I strap him in. There should be like no slack at all once you tighten them.

I wouldn't be as concerned about the high chair, but then again my DS prefers to sit on a big boy seat. He just turned 2.

We re-threaded the high chair straps so they cross cross his chest, if that makes sense. That has kept my 19-month old dd in the high chair these days.

Yeah I don't care too much about the highchair
Not like he eats anyway

The car seat is very concerning

I feel like I make them pretty tight. I don't want to hurt him. I guess I'll just have to make them tighter

It won't hurt him. If he can get out, it's way too loose.

Is he pushing down the piece that goes across his chest?I think if they do that it doesn't matter how tight it is once that moves down they can wiggle their arms out. The couple times my younger DD did that in the car I told her how dangerous it is and that I won't drive her in my car anymore if she does it again-that threat worked well.

Getting out of car seat straps!

Do the straps pass the pinch test? When you buckle him in, push the chest clip all the way down and then pull the strap to tighten, then pull the chest clip up so the top of it is level with his arm pits. You'll know it's tight enough if you are unable to pinch the straps at the shoulders.

There's also a trick where you can button up a shirt after he's buckled in so he can't mess with the chest clip or straps.

If he's able to get his arms out then the straps are not adjusted properly. You should be able to get 2 fingers in b/w his straps and him, but no more. If he can wiggle his arms out, then the car seat will be ineffective if you're in an accident. Tighten it up! Also, make sure it's at the right height. Straps go just above or just below his shoulders, depending if he's forward or rear-facing. There are some great YouTube videos about this.

Re: Getting out of car seat straps!

this is a very recent thing with him-maybe hes done it in the last 5 car rides...

now that i think about it, every time i race back there i realize the horizontal piece is pushed all the way down...

ill pull the horizontal piece down, then click, move it up then tighten. if that doesnt work ill break out an old button down- this idea seems genius

thanks, guys

i hope you guys dont think im the worst mom! this is literally something that just started happening... my little guy is SUCCCCHHHH a scuttlebutt

my oldest one wouldve never dreamed of even touching the seat belt- funny how different they are!

It's more common than you think! The only reason I've heard about the buttoned shirt trick is because someone asks the same question you did on CSFTL and it shows up on my Facebook newsfeed.
