I didn't order bumpers for dd's crib because I know they can be dangerous. The problem is she bangs her head on the crib bars at some point every night and wakes up screaming. I put wonder bumpers on, but because of the design of the crib I cannot put them in the corners. Needless to say, she now manages to wedge herself in the corner, turn and whack her head. Breathable bumpers would be useless because they're paper thin.

If you used traditional bumpers, did you have an issue? DH is very against them but I don't think he realizes that she's hitting her head pretty hard (last night I heard the bump from out bedroom).

Bumpers

We never used traditional bumpers, only breathable. We were concerned at one point with our first baby about him bumping his head and brought it up to our pediatrician. She explained that there is a very real risk with using bumpers, whereas a baby may bump his/her head without them, but can't do any real harm. So the risk is not worth it. The breathable bumpers, while they are super thin, do still provide a bit of cushioning. HTH!

We used traditional bumpers with our son and I will with this baby as well. We did not have any issues at all. He slept on his back in the middle of the crib and once he learned how to roll over and hold his head up, I knew there was no stopping the head banging. He never really gravitated toward an edge. He also never used them to step on to help hoist himself out of the crib.

All this. I couldn't take the risk of regular bumpers. They are actually banned in some places. Too much of a link to SIDS. As it was I barely slept and was always checking her breathing. A bumped head is no big deal.

I agree with this. Maybe try to put the baby down further away from that part of the crib?

Re: Bumpers

I use the breathable bumper too. The one I got is actually a little longer than the crib so I double wrapped the side where DS would gravitate towards. And needless to say I find him every morning in that spot.

Traditional bumpers are not worth the risk of SIDS. It doesn't matter if others have used them without incidence - it is documented that they increase the risk of SIDS. Why chance it? Your DC will bang their heads, arms, legs, etc a million times. They'll be fine. I know it's annoying to be woken up in the middle of the night - that was my life for 23 months,

I probably should have worded my question differently. I'm as neurotic as they come and would never put dd at risk for suffocation. But, we allow them to sleep on their bellies once they can roll because they will know to move their head if they can't breathe. Wouldn't this be the same thing? I suppose I should have asked if anyone with a slightly older than newborn baby (dd is almost 5 months) felt comfortable enough to put a baby who can roll, creep, swing their head around, etc into a bumpered crib and if not, any advice on getting dd to NOT catapult herself into the one spot on the crib where I can't put the wonder bumpers.

Just curious, so what is the point of using them? There is so much risk to them even if the baby doesn't go anywhere near them. The bumpers prevent air flow which is one of the major causes of sids.

Once dd was older we put reg bumpers in the crib. Mostly to keep the pacis in lol. She was mobile. Rolling, crawling etc. we never had a problem them with using them to stand on or anything.

I've seen pads that cover each slate in the crib. They wrap around the individual slate and are not connected.. Maybe that's an option. I wish I remember where I saw them but you can Google I'm sure.

I got these! They're great but with the way her crib is designed I can't put them in the corners so of course she now gravitates to the corners.Chat Icon

It isn't about suffocating against the bumpers so much as it is about air flow. That's the thinking anyway. Bumpers are not recommended at any age.

I used nothing. Banging their heads is a small price to pay compared to the potential of suffocation.

I used regular bumpers with all 4 of my kids. You have to do what you are comfortable with.

I used nothing until recently and I put the bumpers in because my DD moves around A LOT and kept banging her head... she is 10 months.

We used them to protect his head should he bang it. He also liked to "talk" to the animals on the bumpers and touch them. As far as preventing air flow....I don't really see how having a 5 inch bumper in a crib that is otherwise completely open restricts air flow. Once they learn to push up and turn their head or roll over, you can't prevent where they go. Then again, I'm not one to try and prevent belly sleeping either once they learn to roll over since they can move their head well at that point.
