Re: Hawaii

we've never done a cruise to Hawaii, but go to Maui every year. We usually spend 2 weeks - about 9-10 days on Maui and the rest of the time on one of the other islands (we rotate them) - next up we do Maui and the Big Island.

we didn't do a cruise- but we did 10 days in hawai. 5 days on the Big Island, then 5 days on Kauai. we loved both!! The big Island, we went to volcanos national park, a Kona coffee farm, took short hikes to a couple of water falls. the on Kauai we did a catamaran tour of the NaPali coast (this is a must do i think- BEAUTIFUL!!!) and we rented Kayaks one day, too and our hotel had a luau at it, so we did that one night. we just had a great time just driving around in the rental car exploring and seeing what we could find Chat Icon

Just curious though, for a vacation that long 10+...how much would it cost? My guess is over $10k?

The cost really depends. Hawaii is one of those places where you can spend $500+ a night on a hotel or rent a condo for a lot cheaper.

For the two of us, hotels, cars and interisland flights (including breakfast) will run about $5-6K. This doesn't include flights to and from Hawaii - thank God for frequent flier miles.

We also always go "off season" - avoiding summers and holidays.

People always say food is expensive in Hawaii - it's not that bad. We're used to paying NY prices, so it doesn't phase us that much. We don't go out for 5 star meals every night while we're there.

DH and I will pack a soft sided cooler and hit the local store for beverages and sandwich stuff. Most days, we leave the hotel, drive to find a nice quiet beach and picnic.

Personally I wouldn't go on a cruise to Hawaii. My favorite things to do were the sunrises, sunsets, and the luau. On a cruise, you have to rush back to the ship and will miss out on some things. I would however take the guided tours. When we went to Maui, we took guided tours to the road to Hana and the Haleakala sunrise tour and it was the best decision. They took us on off the beaten paths and it was so relaxing not having to drive.

we did a tour package with Globus tours, 15 days 4 islands, all inter island air and hotels included, it was in 2004 and cost $1500 pp plus our nyc airfare. best trip ever. tours are great, you see a lot of stuff you'd never know existed.

Wow, that sounds like a great deal, even for 2004. Going to lookup to see if they still have those.

I did a cruise in 2011, and I hope to do another in the future. You dont have any days at sea, you see 4 islands, and you're docked overnight on 2/4 islands. I was able to find secluded beaches, and do a ton, both through the cruise and on my own.

I rented a convertible on my own and did the road to Hana, which was amazing. Also did volcano national park, kona brewery, a luau (not through the ship-we rented another car), and so much more

Re: Hawaii

This was also many years ago, but I did Maui pretty cheaply once.

We got a great deal on airfare flying off season and stayed at the Plantation Inn in Maui, a BnB. It was really lovely - our room was nicely appointed and had a balcony, and the hotel had a pool and hot tub. Walking distance to the shops in Lahaina. They had a special where the rate included a compact car rental which we upgraded to a Jeep for a nominal daily fee.

Restaurants were NY prices - nothing we're not used to here. There are plenty of budget options too.

Plenty of activities are free or low budget. The beach is free. If you drive yourself to the top of Haleakala (rather than take the tour) all you pay is the national park vehicle fee. Iao Valley State Park is (or was) free and totally worth a trip.

Look into it!
