Question regarding children and the movies

My husband and I took my 3and a half year old twins to the movies for the first time today. Was a 4pm
Show We decided to go bc there was only two other people that had bought seats (you can see beforehand)

We get there and there is maybe 4 families My dd was fine. My son was moving a lot. Wasn't talking per say but would say giraffe (we saw zoo topia). Or look mama a bunny

I tried to quiet him. Brought snacks etc. It was about 45 min in and the older woman 2 rows ahead (we sat away from everyone) turned around and shushed us. I felt embarrassed but just said whatever. Ds asked for something and she turned around and did it again

I took him and we went to the car while dd and dh finished he movie. I was embarrassed at first but then I was mad. This is a child's movie??? He wasn't screaming. And it wasn't constant

Then on fb(I had posted we went and then what happened in the comments) and somebody is now arguing with me saying if they pay hard earned money to see a movie they want quiet and they understand why the woman shushed

Am I in the twilight zone??? I totally get wanting to hear the movie et. But is this not a kids movie. Do sometimes kids talk?? Idk. Am I expecting to much here from other parents:moviegoers.

Re: Question regarding children and the movies

Umm no. You are not wrong here.
If you took your kids to a 9 pm.showing of Bridge of Spies or something, then yeah maybe this woman may have had a leg to stand on. But an afternoon showing of a kids movie? No way.
YOU paid hard earned money too and YOU had to walk out early. Not cool.
And it's not like your kid was continuously screaming or crying or running around.
I don't think you were the one in the wrong at all!

Re: Question regarding children and the movies

I dont think your little guy was saying anything that should have initiated a SHUSHChat Icon . As you said its a kids movie. If you buy a ticket for a kids movie, News flash! Kids will be present. Older people tend to have less patience in certain situations. I would have been angry but did the same as you. My dh probably would have said something. Sorry that happened!

Question regarding children and the movies

You were not wrong--if your son was constantly yelling, crying, kicking the seat...then yes I would have removed him.

Seeing a G/PG children's movie and hearing "look a giraffe" is not at all disruptive in my book. I can't imagine anyone would be upset by a 3 year old doing something like that. That woman needs to chill out.

Um, it's a kids movie at 4pm on a Wednesday. You literally could not have gone at a more polite time. It's not like you brought them to boozy brunch on a Sunday at noon. She sounds like an asshat.

Wow, intolerant asshole. Did she have children with her? Old lady needs to go wait for redbox or not go to a children's movie.

You didn't do anything wrong! It's Zootopia! If people don't want to deal with kids acting like kids, don't go to see a Disney movie during the day. I really hate that. It isn't like you took him to see whatever the hell that Sally Field movie is that just came out!

Question regarding children and the movies

I'm guessing we go to the same theater. I take DS all the time to cartoon type movies during the day and never had an issue. I have to say if someone shhhed be I probably would have told them to F off. You are not wrong. It's a kids movie during they day!!!

Weekend day movies the kids are always noisy if you ever want to go again!!!!! Don't let a cranky B stop you from going.

Re: Question regarding children and the movies

I would have been pissed. I would not have left. First of all it's a kids movie, at 4pm! If you want quiet go at night when there won't be many kids there. If you go to a kids movie at 4pm you should expect..I don't know. KIDS!

And saying giraffe and bunny...come on. That's cute. asking for a snack...normal! It's not like he was throwing a tantrum the whole time, or yelling, or nonstop talking about random stuff. He was enjoying it and engaged.

I'm sorry that nasty women ruined your first movie outing.

You weren't wrong! We took DS to his first moving in December and there were tons of kids talking. It was a kids movie!

If you're worried, you may do better at morning showings. I tend to find the first movie of the day is when most parents bring their kids. But you did nothing wrong yesterday. 4pm is still kids time, IMO, and it was a kids movie!

Question regarding children and the movies

I'm a bit torn. I haven't taken dc1 to the movies, and doubt I will for awhile, because I wouldn't want to interrupt someone's experience at the movies-as a whole, I feel as if people nowadays think it's okay to talk during a movie, which I don't agree with. The only thing I could see taking her to is when certain theaters do 30 minute/hour long cartoons, not movies, in which there will obviously only be very young children. Otherwise, we just wait for the DVD.

However, it was a children's movie, and it really doesn't sound as if he was being too disruptive. I would never have shushed him, but I may have moved my seat if it was that empty and it bothered me that much.

ITA!!! And FTR, I've never been to a kids movie that is "quiet". There is ALWAYS some kid, no matter the age, talking or making noise. But it's a kid movie, that's exactly what I expect. That woman is an a$$.

Same. She was seeing Zootopia = she should not expect silence.

Nighttime/weekend movies have lots of disruptions also..adults phones ringing/texting, talking...
It sounds like movies "experience" - which in my experience has never been complete silence on the audience's part - is just not for this lady. You weren't in the wrong and shouldn't have left!! Don't feel bad. Chat Icon

Question regarding children and the movies

Dont feel bad she was an ahole!!! She was seeing a kids movie, seriously!!!

If she wants such a quiet experience then she should see it in her house because all the movies we have been to with adults have had people talking or texting.

Re: Question regarding children and the movies

From what you said, the theater doesn't seem like it was at all full. Why couldn't she have just moved?!

It takes a lot of nerve to shush another person's kid. Chat Icon

Yes this. Kids movie during the day- noise is expected. Adult movie at night- shushing is warranted.

Question regarding children and the movies

It's a kids movie - I always expect there to be kids talking, making noise etc , at a kids movie. I've been to non-kids movies where adults make a lot more noise, talk a lot more, than what your son did - that's annoying and I would have no problem saying something. But never to a kid at a kids movie. So sorry you had to deal with that. Some people just suck.
