Opinions on bday gift 4yo boy
DD's are invited to a bday party for a classmate. Moms of little boys, how would you feel about a kit that helps DS raise caterpillars and watch them hatch into butterflies? + a gift card... I saw it at MIL's job, and I thought it was cooler than a toy but hey I'm such a nerd so...
If no, then what should I buy? Remember I'm buying for twins, so like $40-$50

I don't have a 4 yo DS yet but I would be totally fine with this gift. As long as it doesn't make a mess it is a good gift in my book

I would not want that in my house. I love science kits, but I don't like bugs in my house. Outside only please.

Re: Opinions on bday gift 4yo boy
Unless you know the family well and know they wouldn't mind, I'd probably not get this. It's different to give it to a nephew whose parents you know, but personally I'd be a little bothered if a stranger got this (I just have daughters but I don't think it matters). And im a science nerd!
There's tons of other science kits out there (growing crystals, microscopes, etc.), or you can look into koala crates. They have a sister box (forgetting the name) that's about engineering. Or maybe a nice Lego set as a joined gift.

I wouldnt think twice to get for a "stranger" or a relative. I think it's a really cool gift! dont overthink... It's better than some random toy that they won't learn anything from.
I actually just purchased an "adventure bug kit" for a 4 yo boy. They can suck up bugs and look at them through a container. My dd (also almost 4) saw it and now wants it for her bday! I love that it's something that gets them outside and learning about nature.

I have an almost 4 year old boy...this is so cool and unique!!
It looks like it's sealed pretty well so I wouldn't worry about bugs being in the house per se.

If you can do it outside, I would let my son have that. He would love it.

I think there's a huge difference between buying someone a kit to directly cultivate insects and a kit to foster exploration of what's already in your backyard.
And people's responses here are case in point that there is a difference between getting this for a stranger and someone you know... There's a few people grossed out by the thought. How do you know where this particular family would fall unless you know them well?

From what I understand of the habitat, the caterpillars don't have to come with it. There is a voucher to send away for them when you are ready... Or if it's not your thing, then feel free to regift

This is correct. Only thing is the kit is $15 and then the person has to spend $8-15 to have the caterpillars delivered (so it's kind of a gift that forces people to pay). I just got one for ourselves & my sister. I just told her yesterday that I'd pay for bug shipping. The kids (2-6) can't wait to get it started & I love the fact that you release the butterflies! A 4 year old boy will LOVE it.
