Help - optometrist or opthamologist?
My child is almost 7 and sometimes complains about things being blurry. She was just tested in January by the pediatrician and did perfect, but now her teacher recommends we get her eyes checked. Do I need to go to an opthamologist (medical doctor) or can I go to an optometrist (like at Lens Crafters)? From what I understand, both do eye exams and can prescribe glasses.
My issue with going to a medical doctor is that the wait is months for a new patient appointment and it costs a ton more (I have no insurance). What did you all do if this happened to you?

Try the optometrist first. Find someone that specializes in kids. Jmo but Lens Crafters would not be my top pick. Where are you? If you're in Nassau, go to Eye Deal Optical in West Hempstead. They've been there forever and really know how to examine and fit children.

We are in Western Suffolk. Any optometrist recommendations? I used to use Dr. Kestenbaum at Optix but not sure he is still in business.

Do you have medical insurance. Ophthalmologist is covered by medical sometimes.

I do but it's an HSA so I pay all of the first $6,000 out of pocket.

I personally would go to an ophthalmologist. I know it's more expensive, but children's eye sight isn't something to mess with IMO.

I agree.
Also just a thought.. AJ gets blurry too when she's tired but not tired. If that makes sense. She runs a million miles a minute but her little body is done, she doesn't know it. And things get blurry. So I make her rest her eyes or concentrate on what she's look at and it clears up.
Still, I'd take mine to a doc for what it's worth. That's what HSA is for. Like PP said.. kid's eye sight is super important. Might as well start at the top then have to go there anyway.
