WWYD visiting newborn baby?

My nephew is two weeks old and we planned on going down to VA this weekend to meet him but DD who is 8 has been coughing the past few days.

She has a history of asthma especially when she gets colds so I took her to PM ped. They gave her albuterol and told me to treat her every 4 hours. We need to kill the cough because it can turn into broncitis/chest cold, etc. If the cough didn't go away I was to bring her to her ped. She has no fever just a nasty barking cough.

Now I'm debating if we should just reschedule our visit. We were going to leave tomorrow. She has no fever or runny nose but is still coughing although not as much as before.

The last thing I want to do is get my nephew sick though..not sure if we are ok to go or if we should reschedule..what would you do??

You should ask the parents.

Do not bring her. Is there anyone to watch her so you can still go visit ? If not, explain to the parents why you need to cancel.

Def do not expose a 2 week old to a coughing 8 year old!
Cough could be due to a lot of things that can be dangerous in such a little baby, esp before any immunizations!

This. I would be pissed if you brought a coughing 8 year old near my newborn.

I would be beyond livid and probably never speak to you again. Don't do it!

A barking cough can be croup which is extremely dangerous to infants. Do not bring your daughter near the baby!

My daughter gets the same thing. An asthma type bark, usually she needs antibiotics to clear it and sometimes oral steroids. I hate giving to her but she doesn't get better on her own, and this is in addition to the albuterol. Albuterol is a rescue and only opens the lungs. It does nothing for a cough.

Even though the doctor tells me she's not contagious I keep her home from school bc she sounds so bad. I wouldn't bring her around a newborn coughing like that.

That's good, I was actually going to tell you to reschedule more for your daughters sake. The weather is so brutal and my asthma has been so bad when that cold hits.

Im glad you cancelled. My older did had a cold, gave it to me, and now my 3 weeks old is in the hospital with rsv and pneumonia. Poor thing is sedated and intubated. It's a scary scary thing.
